Cylinder Head Repair Project

Featured Replies

Hey,

I have a slight problem here with my Fav: It looks like because there is a water leak in the cylinder head the left side of the manifold was not cooled properly, the iron melted or was eaten by corrosion. When I tried to unplug a hose it just broke. Is it fixable?

If I recall correctly that bit is a steel insert which is screwed into the aluminium inlet manifold. You may be able to get it out, but then it may have corroded too much - if so it'll only be a case of getting a secondhand manifold which won't be too difficult. It's not melted, there isn't a part of the engine which is hot enough to melt iron, by the way.

hi the easy way is to just bypass the manifold altogether with a bit of heater hose,

the manifold is not cooled by the coolant it is heated by it to aid emmissions. if you are wanting to repair your manifold that bit where the pipe has broken from actually just press's in.

i may be able to find either bit if you are stuck

hey,

thanks for the replies, maybe it's possible to glue the tube back somehow or plug a wider one on the part that still sticking out?

btw, when I last looked at the manifold while the engine was hot, the left side (near the tube in the picture) was glowing red.

can you please explain more about the bypass method?

ok well first it wont be the inlet manifold that was glowing it will be the one under it (and if thats glowing red with normal use you have bigger problems anyway)

ok you will need to keep the coolant running thru the carb as that works the auto choke, so you could go from the thermostat housing (where the short pipe doubles back) to the heater and put a T peice in to go to the carb.

3 feet of heater hose and a T peice and hose clips and bobs ya uncle

sorry about my stupidity, why there are water in the carb? if I understood right, I need to connect a tube from the thermostat directly to the access point at the throtle body, where the ripped tube from the manifold comes in?

here are some photos of the head and bottom block, how can I clean the gasket fiber remains? btw, the cylinders look too orange/black, is it normal?

OK, the water going to the inlet manifold is to keep it warm to help with fuel atomisation. Basically it heats the air and fuel going into the engine to stop the mixture becoming full of larger droplets of fuel.

The cylinders don't look great - have they been left like that for some time? Was the head gasket already gone?

To remove the old gasket material I usually use a scraper that uses a Stanley Knife blade, works very well without damaging the aluminium of the block.
