vRS buying advice

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I keep umming and arrring about how much to spend on a vRS. I am looking to keep the vRS for around 3 years and originally I set my budget at around 5k... Now I have been thinking that if I wanted to have a car for 3 years then maybe its better spending abit more money i.e 6k?

I do around 10,000 miles a year roughly so I will be putting 30k on the clock through the time ill have the car, so I preferably want to buy a car around the 50-60k miles so it keeps below the 100k mark when I sell it.

What can I get for my money at £6k?

What are your thoughts?

Regards

Chris

Hi Chris,

You sound exactly like I was before I purchased my vrs. After owning relatively cheap cars prior to mine it was a big leap spending 5-6k on a car. As you probably know Furby vrs's hold their money relatively well, but it doesn't mean to say you are a million miles off with what you are wanting to spend.

I bought mine at the end of February, Its on an 04 plate with 30k on the clock. I know I probably got it cheaper as it is yellow and as far as I am aware yellow cars do fetch a bit less than other more 'traditional' colours, and I bought it right at the end of a spell of really snowy nasty cold weather. The salesman made the mistake of telling me they had barely sold a car in the past month! However all that said I paid £5900 after some haggling and that was with 12 months tax and MOT and a full tank of diesel.

The only advice I can give is go for a test drive, don't appear to keen, and be prepared to walk away if the salesman doesn't want to make a deal. Another tip I learnt from someone is try to go at the end of a month, when they are trying to make their monthly targets, and even better still if time allows late on, on a Friday afternoon.

Hope this was of some help to you

Thanks for that good help!

I am think of buying Private! I can't seem to find a vRS at a dealer anywhere and I have asked around.

Its the waiting game I don't like.. I just want a nice one to pop up preferably black and want to spend around the 6k mark for low mileage.

How have you found the vRS? I havnt driven one as yet... Whats the performance like? Handling etc.??.... :)

I think you'll struggle to get a low mileage one for £6,000. The announcement that the new 'hot' vRS is a petrol has only really firmed up residuals.

One thing to bear in mind is that they take mileage very, very, well indeed. The engines are really only starting to get run-in at 50,000 miles and I've just seen 55MPG/72MPH average including several full-speed runs on the A3 between Frankfurt and Munich yesterday (127MPH sat-nav corrected on the flat, two-up and laden with luggage). I'd rather have an 80,000 mile 4-year old car than a 30,000 mile 6-year old car as long as it had been serviced properly.

It's also starting to get hard to find cars that haven't been messed about with.

Nice to know that I am going to see a good few miles in my Fabia then. I was quite fortunate to find mine as it has been serviced every 6000 miles and I intend to follow on with that :)

I have found it exactly what I expected and more. Its fantastic for cruising on fast A-roads and motorways and quite a blast on country lanes. A lot of people have said that Seat Leons handle better and that the Fabia is quite heavy and suffers from understeer when pushed but to be honest I have found it more than adequate and capable of surprising other drivers quite regularly.

Ive just sold my silver VRS was a 07 (sep) with 24k on the clock and the dealer had it listed on their forecourt for just over 8500.

Because of the 10,000 mile service intervals and the mileages I was running in mine, it had a service every 4-6 months for the first 3 years of it's life. It has wanted for nothing (literally) and even now my wife just has to say it's not perfect and it's straight up to Robinsons in Norwich for a fettle. BUT! Because it's done 100,000 miles it's only worth £5000 against £7500 if it only had 40,000 on it. Sorry, but I'd rather have my higher mileage car and the £2500 for anything that crops up.

It's due to get leather seat covers in September (my Birthday, and the car's) and I'm sure Baker21 can polish up the already mirror finish a bit more and that'll be it good for another 100,000 miles with regular servicing.

Yes, and I'll wager they'll get all of that.

I agree 100% - the handling most folks are discussing will never be explored by most drivers. And if you want it to oversteer on demand then a Jabba Rear AntiRoll Bar will make that happen!

Go to the Skoda uk site & go to the used cars section, this lists ALL available cars at dealers, I have been keeping an eye on the Furby vRS prices & the dealer & private prices are very similar, you will find the odd dealer ' extracting the urine ' on price, but thats life.

Also look on petrolheads site, you get the odd dealer on there, E bay also do classified ads but there are not may Furby's on there.

You may get a bargain if you are prepared to look around ( my son did ), all I will say is dont give up & Happy hunting.
