1.8Tsi Running in and Turbo

Featured Replies

I’ll be picking up my Scout 1.8Tsi in mid July ( hopefully ) and going on hols in early August. This will involve a lengthy motorway journey.

I’ve read when running in that it’s best not to stay at a constant speed so how should I approach the motorway part of our trip ?

Would varying the speed between say 56 and 70mph be OK ? 56 for 20 mins then 70 for 20 mins ?

Also this will be the first petrol turbo I’ve owned. Do you have to treat the turbo like the diesel unit and give it time to cool ?

Cheers

I'd expect the usual running-in advice applies...

- Don't labour the engine, ie its better to be running at 3000rpm up a hill than a gear higher at 1500rpm

- Yes you could vary the speed a little, as that presumably varies the load

Also yes you should give the turbo time to cool down at the end of a journey or after hard driving. Usually that's a case of taking it easy for the last couple of miles and/or letting the car idle for a couple of minutes.

At the end of the day, the car will already have been hammered through the gears on the factory rolling road anyway :) So don't worry too much about it. I've long been a believer that the running in period is at least as much about brakes, clutch etc as it is about the engine.

I committed the cardinal sin of having a tow bar fitted the day after it was delivered and then - horrors of horrors, actually towed a caravan with it.

It's still going fine.
