False floor

Featured Replies

Thinking about the false floor route in my furby vRS

Any ideas on how to keep that pesky amp cool?

Heard about little fans from maplin or something? But how do i power them?

Here's my current one - basic sheet of kitchen unit type shelving, with 2 bits of 2x2 to act as "joists" - I also cut a hole in it to be able to see the amp powering the comps, now with a sheet of perspex in there. I have 4 CPU fans to install when I come to it. ;)

What about the neons Jase?

ONe that I'm not blessed with :D

On mine im just using the amps built in fan and made sure theres plenty of room around the amp so air can circulate. But as Jason said PC coolong fans work quite well, Maplins also so instal fans that come with a nice chrome grill, just hook them up to your remote live for the amp.

The bonus of having an MDF base to the install is all your wiring and be routed and secured nice and tidy. Ive got some little plastic tags that you screw down and then feed a cable tie through, a tidy install will give less problems and is alot safer.

I have two amps in the spare wheel bay under a false floor with NO fans. Never had any problems even after constant heavy use.

Right ill have to continue my shopping list then, gonna invest in some acoustic carpet, some mdf and the skin on the back of my knuckles.

is your finished now then ross or are you still doing more?

It needs wiring up still, weekend job ;)

Neon is in and illuminates the amp quite nicely, then its time to attack the front doors to fit the Focal components.

Pray to the ice gods that they spare your knuckles mate.

Im dragging the wiring through first then ill fangle with all the parts. Reckon thats best to do or get components sorted first?

I'm a technician at a Skoda dealer so im quite used to getting skinned knuckles taking these cars apart. Should cause to many hassels, thats why im doing it in stages so it gets done right.

Do the job however you feel most comfortable with it, I tend to mount the amps/boxes first so you know where you have got to run you cabling to.

So fans are ok to run off the amp direct then/

They wont spin outta control?

Not sure about this. PC fans are 12v. When a cars ignition is on its more like 14.4v. Will this burn the fans out? I would of thought you could use the same earth as the amp and then use the remote cable from the HU as the +. Saying this if you have more than one amp the remote cable may start running out of amps so a relay maybe needed.

The amp remote is only a very small signal just to switch on, so yeah then that could be used on the primary side of a relay and just use a live from the amp power to run the fan on the secondary side.

Most things in a car are designed to run in 12v, quite a few on 5v so things keep working when the battery is flat, can see running a 12v fan being a problem.

I'm pretty sure you can get a specially designed car audio relay from most good ICE shops which do just that. Some of them even have a delay in them so when you turn off the radio, effectively killing the remote, the fans will continue running for x minutes to cool the amp.

Those hightech ones probably cost about

I run my neons off the remote cable .... fans prob be ok too I wud have thought.... as john says when running it's more like 14.4v .... i rekon that wud prob be ok too tho.... maybe someone with some more lekky knowledge will let us know ?

Btw.....

Jase... I really don't like ur perspex efforts covering ur subs ... why did ya not stealth them up in the sides or summat??

Ross - Why god? What possesed u to use that god awful bright carpet??

Sorry guys, hope I don't offend... :)

Here's my boot build btw in case anyone's interested....

The perspex is ****.... need to replace that... and the amp is getting replaced too with a better one when i get the money so I can amp up me front speakers too... and give a bit more juice to the sub

I dout you will need them... buut if you want to go for them most case fans will be fine in a cars system.. you will deffo need a relay a 5 amp one from halfords will be fine.. this needs to sit inbetween your amp and fan, the realy will be switched by the remote wire (fan turns on and off with HU) take the permanate live and earth from the amp... this is the way to do neons as well... or you coudl put them straight on to the boot light switch..

If you want to go fancy on PC-based fans, which indeed WILL probably burn out pretty fast at >12V and will also make a LOT of noise, you could get a fanbay/rheostat type solution. They in themselves create a bit of heat but it will allow you to drop the voltage down to say 7V with the engine not turning over and 9V with it turning over - Pretty much every decent quality fan I've ever used will run fine on 7V and between 7-9V you'd get decent airflow with virtually no noise.

I would definitely use a relay as Ross is suggesting. The last thing you want is for the small driver circuit in your expensive audio gear to blow up and damage (potentially, although unlikely) the rest of the equipment that end.

The kind of relay you'd need to drive these small fans is very small & cheap anyway :D

Other point was already made though - these amps are made to run in hot conditions (read: cars) anyway. If you dont isolate them completely from the cooling impact of the body of the car, a lot of the heat will drain away through that anyway (should that be the chassis, ah well  )

The light carpet isnt actually that light, the camera I have is getting quite old now and doesnt allways take an accurate pic colour wise. Also i had the carpet left over from another job I did, used it as a first atempt rather than use a brand new roll, just incase it didnt work out. Easy enough to re trim ina darker carpet when im happy with how the system works, also going to raise the sub up a little.

But thank you for your 'constructive' comments.
