Cruise Control Retro Fit Woes

Featured Replies

I decided to have cruise control fitted to my 55 plate Octavia Ambiente, as it seemed to be quite a straight foward job. I phoned a local independant VW garage, and was quoted £125+VAT fitted, with genuine VW parts. They fitted the stalk, but told me that although the code to activate the cruise control went into the ECU fine,it wasn't working. They told me to take it a to a Skoda dealer to be re-coded, and 'we will sort out the bill later'. Took it into the Skoda dealer, who confirmed that the code was in the ECU correctly, and that it was probably a wiring fault, or a wire missing. They also confirmed that there was an error code on the ECU related to the cruise control, which left me £70 lighter.

I passed this info onto the original garage. They told me that they had had the same problem with a Mk4 Golf that week, which they sorted by fitting an extra wire, and that they could sort my car. Took it back a week later, and after 2 and a half hours the garage admitted that they were stumped. Apparently there was nowhere to terminate one end of the extra wire despite following the fitting instructions that came with the wiring kit and the stalk kit. They were out of ideas, and their next move would be for me to take it to an auto electrician they use, who is 'a bit of a whizz', and let him sort it out. They haven't as yet phoned me to make an appointment with the auto electrician.

Has anyone else had this much trouble fitting cruise to their Occy? Where do I stand with the bill when it comes to settling up? The garage do seem genuine in wanting to get the job sorted, but with these extra trips to the garage and auto electrician (60 mile round trips), does the original quote mean anything now, even though in my eyes it should have been a straight foward job for someone who knows what they are doing? Wish I'd travelled the extra distance and taken it to Shark now!!

Not sure if this helps, but on some of the early Fabia cruise retrofits, a wire had to go from the stalk assembly and be terminated in a particular part of the engine ECU in the engine bay. That is all I remember to be honest.

There will be a wire missing from pin 13 of the steering column ECU to the engine ECU/e-box.

Thanks Ben. Can't work out why they didn't sus this out, as they ordered the missing wire and I assume instructions came with it.

The "missing" wire should be included with the cruise retrofit kit. Along with the instructions :giggle:
