Complete respray for superb?

Featured Replies

Was wondering weather to get my superb fully re-painted (assuming my steering vibration (another topic) doesnt cost too much to sort).

it is April 04 with 160k 1.9td. I have had it from new and been using it for private hire taxi work which I am going to stop. Its still a great car overall except getting scratched/dented etc and a bit shabby on the outer.

It's also white and I want to keep the car but maybe change the colour to dark grey or something else dark (not sure what colours are nicest). Would there be much difference in main dealer price compared to say an local accident/ repair garage? I think I was quoted £800-£1100 in local garage dependant on metallic or not. I assume any quotes cover the inner edges of doors, boot etc?

Thanks for any advice.

Not many dealers will actually paint a car themselves, they will farm it out to a local body shop (whilst adding their cut on top) so go direct and save yourself some money.

As for whether they will paint the door / boot / bonnet closures, you would need to specifically ask them, as this increases the labour involved massively, also make sure that it is their policy to remove the bumpers, lights, door trims and handles, aerial etc prior to painting as you will be amazed how many people will just mask them up if they can get away with it! Don't forget your engine bay will still give the game away about the colour change (as it will still be white).

Ive been qouted similair prices to get a car painted including door shuts and top of engine bay but I had stripped the car down my self. My dad had his kit car painted including door shuts, boot and engine bay for 1K, but again, the car was stripped down prior to work being carried out.

But as Gizmo says, check out if they remove trim items, otherwise the finish can look cack on close inspection

Ok, will do a few checks, thanks ;-)

Surely it would be more economic to sell on the car and buy another in better condition, with the right colour throughout? Personally I would hate to own a car which is one colour ouside, and another under the bonnet, inside the boot etc, and that will be an issue whemn you do eventually sell it..

I cant imagine that £1100 or more spent on a paint job would add more than £200 to £300 to the value, looking at the miles you have done.

As I said I will be keeping it until it dies, hopefully 2-3 years as I cant afford to buy a newer car only an 8-10 year old for the same money. i have been quoted £1500 from a decent reputable company, that after a £3000 quote from another. So I may go for the paint job, after all it is only for me and will look nice ;)

Have it detailed, call Baker 21, ask for Simon, and get some smart repairs done if you have small dents, the money you are considering spending is 70% of it's value, it's a no brainer mate, @ 160k it's well on it's way to a big fail, and you'll be left with a nice paint job and no box or engine, as it's an ex cab if you wanted to sell it you'll struggle, and you'll never recover the cash, see it this way, you have it painted, and the next day someone keys it all down one side, is it worth it, if it goes from a-b who cares if it's got dents in it, the Superb isn't a Ferrari, the only time it gets a compliment is when someone sits in the back in true comfort.

The quotes you have received seem interesting and say a lot about the type of work that will be completed, usually a decent bodyshop will strip the car and charge you for it in order to ensure all areas are painted, sounds like a lot of money for a motor, which in all reality isn't worth much..........

Similarly to you, I have 175k on the clock and despite what Supurbia has said about it being 'on it's way to a big fail' I am confident with some regular maintainance and TLC it will go for a while longer, decided to keep mine until it dies now as it's just not worth shifting on, worth more to me to be honest as it keeps on running............

Thanks for the suggestion mate, on this note can you post up some pics of the paintwork condition and dent's etc - alanbenjy? I have had a few dent's knocked out of mine for little money and it's made the world of difference........

160k on it's way to 'a big fail'? In that case, my 210,000 mile Auto (which is sweet as a nut, returns 50mpg and never uses any oil) must be F****d then?

We all know the common design problems with the Superb, but ultimately it's a solid car which will do mega miles if it's looked after. It's not a french supermini.

I do agree that some decent smart repairs and a paint detail may be a more cost effective sollution, though..depending on condition.

Ah, but your cars haven't been taxis have they? there's a big difference in use patterns, yours will be started up 3-5 times a day, the cab will be turned over up to 100 times a day, you may use the open road a lot, the cab will probably spend most of the day in a clutch ride urban situation.

Without a doubt the Superb will do good mileages, but when it's been taxied you have to factor in the clutch and flywheel at the very least, which is on average £800 to do, gearbox bearings, starter motor, alternator etc, all of which get a bigger bashing than a private car does, I'm just trying to save the guy wasting money, fair enough if he wants to keep it, but hoofing out that sort of money is a no no imo, better to go the clean it up route, or sell it and buy another that hasn't done the use yet, for a reference point for the OP, mine was an 04 comfort 1.9 automatic with 102k on it in 7/10 condition, I took 3k in PX for it, had various offers of £2.2k - £2.5k, so I have to assume your car is worth no more than £1500 at this stage, so in effect you will spend what it's worth on a paint job, and then risk a large bill potentially just down the road, ask yourself how old is the clutch, does the car run nice, can you hear rumbles/vibrations, if the car is showing any of these, you will be getting a bill eventually, hth.

p.s Simon, link up what you did to Johann's car, the red one, just to show him how a car can be made to look without a paint gun.

Yep some very fair points, I suppose a taxi probably gets a harder life than your average high-mileage car.

That red superb looks MINT Baker. And heres me thinking slapping a bit of turtle wax wheel brightner on my car made it look good. Haha.

Also to be fair, you dont see many white superbs about (or I dont at least) Guy who bought my wheels off me had a white superb and I thought it looked quite nice.

Thanks Ian and it was a long time ago I did that Superb, would like to think my work has improved but I guess to keep the topic on track, here is what White can look like after some time and effort:

And something Skoda:

Oh and by the way some protection and cleaning is better than nothing.......... ;)

This plan is bound to reduce even further the value of an almost zero value car?
