WOW - More opposition on the way

Certainly looks to be an improvement on the current Sportage.

Also looks just like a Hyundai ix35 and a Kuga !!

Not as distinguished and individual as the beast. Like the 7yr warranty tho.

Hi Bassa,

We currently own Kia Ceed SW - nice car, good warranty, good dealer BUT we needed to go back to a 4x4. The first choice would have been the new Sportage and we were prepared to wait.

As the basic chassis etc. is the same as the iX35 we looked at that, how dissappointing that turned out to be. For me the driving position was very poor, low head room paticularly in the back. Lots of plus points but when we looked at the Yeti there was no choice but to go for it. The build quality, finish of the Yeti and attention to detail and driveabilty won the day for us.

We've got Kia in our group and I've seen some bits about the new Sportage and I was suprised how much I liked the styling, but need to drive it first before making up my mind.

Hi James,

I guess like all things in life it's down to personal choice - some you like and some you don't.

I think I like the new Sportage better than the iX35 in terms of styling and there is the 7 year warranty?

I read somewhere that the interior quality would be upgraded for the UK market and a 1.6 petrol turbo with a dual clutch type semi auto would eventually be available. Although it's a close cousin of the ix35, it looks a bit nicer on the eye, to me at least. Can't argue with the 7 year warranty though.

At the end of the day the acid test will be in the driving. The ix35 had lots of nice toys etc but it rolled in corners, had some cheapy plastics inside and that spoiled it as I preferred it over the Kuga. There is a world of difference though when you drive the Yeti, it just oozes quality and its still going to be very hard to beat. Will be interesting to see how Skoda eventually updates the Yeti ?

What a NON-TEST test. He did not even need to leave the showroom for the comments he made.

Got a trip to S. Korea though!

Sorry, but YEUK

And is it a 4x4?

Wow, the Hyundai Kuga. Or is it the Ford ix35?

Not at all original and just plain boring imo.

He must have done this one on his day off!

Or his brief was: 'Go copy the crowd and we don't want anything that looks fresh and original like the Yeti either' B) .

Have to agree. The Hyundai iX35 looks remarkably like a cheaper attempt at a Kuga whilst the Sportage, although a little different, seems to be very much in the same kind of mould. Someone in another thread mentioned "road presence" which the the Yeti has bags of - it stands out from the crowd. I'm sorry to say that I don't think I'd take a second look at either of the SE Asian offerings but that's fairly typical of their cars.

The thing that strikes me with these 3, Kia, Kuga and Hyundai, is the "heavyness" of the rear three quarter, and how difficult it must be to accurately reverse them because of the stupid shaped 3/4 window. The Yeti is much more balanced, and I presume lighter inside.

We'll also be having the Mitubishi ASX join the bunch too soon. The acid test for me would be to try and get a mountain bike upright inside any of them - somehow, I don't think so. emoticon-0149-no.gif Interiors look cheap and plasticky too. Kuga is pretty good quality but that central silver console looks bl**dy awful!!! emoticon-0110-tongueout.gif

Looks like a Cashcow to me. Therefore not 'butch' enough and just another boring crossover.

Yeti looks like a proper mini 4X4, the others don't.

if the Sportage high end will be similar price to the SM elegance here in ireland... I can say it will be a contender... but the looks of it... It would definitely more expensive!

I think from the road test reports so far on the Kia it doesn't drive too well and still suffers from the dreaded airfix plastic panelling inside the cabin which lets a lot of these asian made cars down, and although some of these cars look great value for money with all the toys etc, they get found out when you drive them, whereas the Yeti is just so good to drive its worthy of its value IMO.

Sportage will be launched in a "1st Edition" 2.0L 140bhp diesel spec with 800 coming into the country, for £20,700. - This will include LED DRL's, Leather, Front and Rear Heated seats, 19" alloy wheels, reverse camera, etc etc.

The Spec is HUGE for the money... We currently own a Sportage (as my mam's car - we tow with it) and a Cee'd CRDi for the wife - both are great cars, and have the 7 year warranty, but build quality is down on my Superb.

Kitten and I looked at the Sorento and Sportage because of the warranty but Kia seemed to have 'priced themselves out of the market'

We both agreed that the interior design and finish was not a patch on the Yeti, we're both VERY happy we have made the RIGHT choice

Are the DRL on the Yeti Xenon or just plain Halogen???

DRL's are old fashioned Halogen at the moment, though I am going to look at LED replacements

The DRL bulb on the Yeti is as I'm sure your probably aware located in a separated section in the upper part of the front fog light and uses a special low energy long life P13W bulb. They say it should last the lifetime of the car if not longer.

Thanks TP, perhaps I wont bother looking then.

I've got a pair of cheap Ebay DRL LED specials I was going to fit the old car that I think I'm going to fit in the boot to give some better lighting there.
