Aircon Re-gas - how often?

Featured Replies

Just a quicky - I had the system regassed 2 years ago.

After 2 years, it wasn't working properly, so I took advantage of Quik-F*ck*ups no fix, no pay offer, and it's now working fine again. (£50 for a nice cool driving experience)

So, the question is, how often would you expect a system to need re-gassing? The car is a 2001 vRS with 101,000 on the clock..

I don't mind paying £50 every couple of years, but is it sympomatic of something more serious?

Mine first needed doing at about 4.5 years old - it lost its gas over the next few months and they traced it to a leaking O ring on the condenser.

Mine needs doing every couple of years - although it seems all the fluids on my car have minor leaks! Takes me back to my days prepping Bedfords - if it wasn't leaking, it was empty!

Mine has not needed a re-gas since new (7 years) and puts out really cold air when set to lo. From what I have read, this might be an exception.

Fingers crossed mine is still cold and 6 years old, with no problems although I do tend to run it regular. B)

My cars a 1999 model. The aircon has never been touched and it's still cold enough for my wife to complain every time I turn it on.

I got a service at Allams on Saturday and they did a free inspection.

On the report I was told the Aircon needs a service even though it blows ice cold?

I've had mine just over 4 years, and I'm thinking it iught need a service now, to restore the full Balticness effect.

Guy in Kwik fit reckoned you can lose 25% a year.

Thanks guys.

After 3 weeks it's still chucking enough cold air to freeze the dangly bits off a brass monkey.

It looks as though there might be a leak on one of the pipes or O rings (friendly VW mech suggested there also might be a leak in the condensor as this is apparently a not too uncommon problem), so come Autumn when it gets a bit less essential (and I've replaced the cam belt, brake padss, cracked windscreen etc. etc. etc.) I'll get it dye filled and checked over.

How the hell did we manage before air-con was fitted as standard?

Finding out about Air cons, is one of the reasons I registered,

I had my Octavia serviced recently, the manager suggested I have the air con Re Gassed???

I said that due to decreased fuel economy, I rarely use the air con, so, thanks but no thanks.

His reply was that if I didn`t (Lots of techy stuff), but basically something dreadful will happen !!!!

I think he might have been drumming up buisness, But, he has got me worried.

Any one got an informed opinion please??

You need to use the aircon now and then or it will seize up and cost loads money, so he was telling the truth

I use mine all the time, it doesn't seem to lower the MPG significantly from what I can see. A guy I work with has an 02 L&K that he's owned from new, his a/c has never been switched off and is still going strong.

Air con does need to be used frequently to stop the seals from drying out (which in turn leads to the gas leaking out - it will then struggle to cool the car down).

It has also been proved that driving with the air con on over 40mph actually uses less fuel than driving with the windows open (due to the increased drag).
