PANIC STATION! does my pickup require a new lump?

Featured Replies

HI dudes. just chanced my pik up through the mot ,after i painted her up and brought her out of retirement after a year, and she failed 4 a few brake pipes...fair enough....no probs................

BUT... on way home the oil light came on and then suddenly i heard a cranch and my pick up was dead!!

please do your best with these queries,

1. was this an oil pump failure cos she had a good oil reading???? oil seemed to be lying in the sump as per a cold reading.

2. when she cools down will a new oil pump and a set of shells fix her?

3. if i do need a new engine wat options do i have ? ie. does the 1.9 diesel, 1.3 petrol fit straight in?

thanks in advance u havnt let me down yet ;)

Sounds terminal, oil pump or pressure relief valve failure.

A new set of shells probably won't fix it, if it's seized it's likely there's other damage.

Other engines will fit in, but all will mean modifications - the 1.3 would probably be the easier change (as it's petrol), the diesel will mean more changes (fuel system, exhaust), plus the final drive of a diesel is higher so if you didn't change gearbox it would be very revvy for a diesel.

If you need to change engine, I'd have thought another 1.6 would be the way to go.

i agree with darren on this ^^, it will be terminal, not worth even bothering to open it up to look!!! just find another 1.6 engine, it doesn't necessarily have to be from a felicia, you could use one from a polo and just swap some bits over from your existing one

yup its dead, the 1.6 motor is very prone to bocking the oil pickup pipe up with sludge. the bottom end is probly ok as they usually seize the cam in the head first and snap the cambelt before doing any bottom end damage..

as darren and tom say its prob best bet to just get a replacement motor.

go for a replacement vw engine! the 1.6 found in mk4 polos and some mk3 golfs should go in without any hassle. if you are feeling brave then there are a whole choice of polo engines which will go without too much work, as the 1.6 was a development of the polo engine. the 1.4 abd engine is cheap to get hold of (commonly fitted in pov spec mk3 golfs but can produce around 90bhp run on polo gt injection) the polo gt engine would also go in without much trouble. if you were really brave a polo g40 engine would also fit, there are also the 16v engines out of the mk4 polo 16v, mk5 polo gti and lupo gti which are also small block vag engines (just like the 1.6 used in the skoda)

guess it all depends what you want to achieve.

CHEERS lads at least i no not to bother lookin in!

think i'll go down the 1.6 felicia / polo route.

just need engine thats quick and easy to stick in and get the yoke back to the mot centre.

is the mk3 polo and mk4 polos just around the same year as my cube?

if you get one from a polo it needs to be a mk4, try to avoid the engines from a mk3 golf, even though it has the same engine code they normally have the earlier type with the chain driven oil pump

ebay linky

whats the downside of that tom? just out of interest

UPDATE GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!

JUST found myself a 1998 1.3 lxi 5door felicia hatchback. ONLY 78000k and only £100

Q1. what modifications ( if any) need done to make this engine fit.? ie looms, brain, gearbox etc if the brain needs changed does the ignition need changed as the guy is unsure if he can find the key 4 this car.

Q2 will the 2 front struts fit my pickup from this car?

Q3. this car has rev counter and digital clock on the dash clock panel will this fit straight into my pickup at the same time so that the milage matches the engine as my van has 156000k.

Q4. will the 1.3 be powerful enuff 4 the pickup

thanks again men

1. is it an mpi or spi model?

2. yes

3. the clocks will fit yes, but if your pickup does not have airbags you will need to remove the airbag warning lamp from the unit. it's not a good idea to change the clocks so that it shows a different mileage, it will make it difficult to sell in the future. you can swap out just the speedo head too, so you could use your existing speedo head in the rev counter cluster. this is exactly what i did on my pickup

4. erm yeah, depends what you mean by enough power?

i'll find out if its an mpi or spi and post again tom m8. i assume ther wud be more work in the spi?

when u say speedo head is that the end that goes to the clock and it includes the digits in the milage read out?

my pick up is the cube back and just wondering if the 1.3 is powerful enuff to hog around a bit of a load and possibly tow a wee trailer from time to time :S

its a 1.3 mpi tom. wats the complications if any.

however....... the guys have lost the keys so im not sure whether or not to buy this yoke without hearing the engine running. :wonder:

does the keys of these cars have a sensor in them ? if not could i start the car without the key.

Keys for them do have the immobiliser chip in them, so you won't be able to get it started without them (or by putting your immobiliser box and chip onto it and using VAG-COM to set it to the ECU in the car, slightly complex but possible).

Swap shouldn't be too difficult, I think, probably easier than any other, not sure that's the way I'd go though, I'd get the right engine and put it in, myself. Saves on any possible issues with insurance and it being gutless....
