50000 mile vRS service - few questions

Featured Replies

My vRS is asking for the 50000 mile service. According to the book it is just an oil change and check - correct?

I was hoping to take it to my very local 'Top Car' - a decent MOT and service garage, but giving them a ring they say that they have their own 'bulk oil' with a fixed cost of £17.50. Now, I thought that the oil needed by the vRS was special and very expensive so I wondered if this 'bulk oil' should be avoided and I bring my own. Also I heard that the sump plug should be changed at every oil drain. Not sure about this - anyone know?

Your experiences of 'all makes/models' garages are welcomed.

If that's what the book says, then... :) I know the book's wrong on the cam belt (either 4 yrs / 60k miles), but other than that I think it's all right?

It's supposed to be 5w40 meeting VW's spec (it's in the sticky at the top of the forum). You can buy Quantum Platinum (5l) for about £25-30 RRP, so it's not super-expensive.

The part's < £2. The guides advocate changing it, although I know people that never have, and haven't suffered any ill effects.

The correct oil as mentioned before is 5w40 but it must meet 505.01 spec. You can also use 5w30 fully synthetic provided it meets the newer VW507. 507 incorporates the 505.01 spec.

A bulk oil generally means a 10w40 semi or 5w30 semi ford approved oil. Most garages use these oils in any car without looking at the manual. If they try to put that in your car i'd be very worried. I speak to many garags a day and you'd be surprised how many think 10w40 is even OK to put in new BMW and Aston Martins.

Thank you for the thoughts. Sounds like I will be safer taking all my own service items for them to fit.

Hello Tailhappy,

Bearing in mind your original entry was last month, add a couple of points.

Since servicing is 12months or 10.000 miles, you have hit the 10.000 mile barrier.

Full service, suggest renew all (4) filters (paid £30 E.Bay), Quantum engine oil 505.01 spec (paid £25.00 E.Bay)

Checking of all fluid levels and general condition and operation of all components.

You could buy 1litre of brake fluid £5.00 and get a friend to assist and do a fluid change. (Garage charges £35+)

The only specialist tool is the gearbox fill/level plug removal/refitting.

All this is DIY, saves garage labour.

If done close to MOT will have an professional eye over anything you may have overlooked.emoticon-0105-wink.gif
