Could it be the clutch?

Featured Replies

Hello all, I have tried to save the kitten so massive apologies if this has been covered before...

I have been getting a clunk and squeal when changing gear recently just as the clutch bites there is often a metallic clunk or clicking sound and if i'm "making progress" there is often a squeal at the same moment.

My question to you is, what does this problem sound like? Could it be my clutch? (note there is definately no clutch smell when this happens). The car is a 1.4Mpi with about 74,000 miles on the clock and it is on the original clutch. However, could it be something more serious like a drive shaft or something?

The thing is, i have just purchaced a 1.8T 20V AUQ engine from an octavia and was planning to have that in by febuary next year... i'd hate to have to fork out on a new clutch just for it to be replaced by the new engine in a few months...

Any Ideas are welcome guys!

Many Thanks,

Duggie.

No idea on the metallic noise, but if the whole engine is coming out for the 20v, may aswell run it to the ground surely. If it goes then get the bus until the engine is in.

You live in Oxford dont ya? Good bus service there. Got a mate who's in Oxford Brooks.

Yea, the bus service is good here but unfortunately, in order for me to get to work from where I am based it would mean catching 3 busses at £3.20 each return... plus needing to get up about 45 minutes earlier... perhaps I should invest in pedal power....

Cheers!

£3.20 return, cheaper that £600 for a new clutch and fitting etc.

Pedal power is also another good option.

I think, when it is possible for me to keep the car snuggled up in the garage, i shall use my (now cobwebbed) pedal cycle... All good!

If you buy a new clutch couldn't you use it in with the Octy 02J 5 speed gearbox?

I don't know about the metallic clunk, but is the squeal when making progress there when the air-con is turned off? I have no idea why it happens, but I have this same issue on my car, and I've heard the squeal on other vRSs too. It only happens when the air-con is on and I've had it for 4 years and 100,000 miles so I doubt it's going to break now...
