indie or main for cambelt change

Featured Replies

Hi

My 2006 vrs is due a cambelt change very shortly.

I'm after either a good indie or a main dealer to do this.

Does any one have recommedation for this either in London or Norfolk or anywhere inbetween thanks.

If your ESP/ABS unit hasn't been replaced yet due to the common fault (see here: http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/153853-honest-johns-take-on-esp-problems/page__hl__honestjohn) and your car has a full dealer service history so far, I'd be tempted to get the cambelt done by the dealer also.

This might give you more of a chance to get an out of warranty good will claim when the ESP problem does appear.

I am waiting to pick up my 07 plate Octavia TDi PD Vrs. It has ESP fitted so will it have this problem???

The car is supplied with a Skoda UK 12 month warranty so will this problem be covered

Has anyone got a car with ESP and the unit hasn't failed or is It Going to fail

Might cancel the car now

I bought my 06 VRS in February and the ESP problem appeared withing 2 months so I had to have the ABS unit replaced. This was covered by the used car warranty, the only issue was the company that provide the warranty (it's provided by a third party not Skoda) sent an assessor to check the fault but this just delayed the replacement unit being fitted by a couple of days.

No one can tell you if it will have the problem or not. At the end of the day, it is a small percentage of units that have failed so far and it doesn't just affect the VAG group as BMW and Ford group cars use the same unit. It has a high exposure on forums and the press etc because it is expensive if it does fail and in my opinion, no one should be charged for it as it is a sealed unit that should last the life of the car.

Had my cambelt done today at my local trusted independent for a bargain £346, and that was with water pump and MOT as well. Had ridiculous quotes from a few local Skoda dealers of £550+ and since it doesn't warrant a stamp in the book I can't see any point in paying any more than I need to to get the job done.

I was interested to note that they have invoiced 2.68 hrs to complete the job, as opposed to Skoda who seem to think they needed almost 5 hours. Maybe I look at this back to front, but I'd expect a main dealer to be more familiar with the cars and therefore be able to complete the job a little faster thus almost offsetting the cost of their higher hourly rates - but clearly not!
