how truthful is the range left to go bit

Featured Replies

ok guys finally got the vrs sorted and on the road, took it for a blast last night and the miles to go till it needs a drink went from 70 to 25 in 10 miles??

now i was never good at maths but even i know that 70 - 10 = um well about 60 yea

how much truth does it tell, will it stop when it says 0 or is there still some margin left :wonder:

oh and slightly disapointed its only a bit faster on acceleration than my old TDI with its few mods B)

maybe it is time for a remap or something

It all depends on how you are driving it. It doesn't just look at the level of fuel in the tank but also the revs and the current miles per gallon too to make its calculation.

Look at the "miles left" figure more as "if I keep driving it the way I am now how much further will it go"

They're not much quicker than TDIs in terms of accelerating (because of the TDI torque at low revs) but top end is miles better. And no need to change gear every two seconds

As Chicken Eyebrow says about the "availabe range" mode; I've left on a steady run after several weeks commuting, and 50 miles later, had 50 miles more available than I had when I started the trip.

He's completely wrong about the need to change gear more often in a TDi though, since you don't need to change down 4 gears to get enough engine revs to get the car to accelerate in the first place. ;)

ahh yes i can see why the range dropped so quickly then :giggle: i suppose it looks at how much is left and the rate its being used.. i'll try a bit harder then to get it higher lol..

i recon its pretty close between my tdi and the rs up to about 70ish, the tdi does have a few trick bits tho and will happily lug along in 5th at 30mph where the rs wont..

top end is much higher on the rs tho (is 140mpd quoted for std :wonder: ) not that i would condone driving that fast etc even if it were just to see what it would do

Oooh thats below the belt Ken :giggle:

I do sometimes crave the torque of a diesel. To be honest for real world driving - fuel economy, overtaking easily and cruising on a motorway - turbodiesels are perfect (if Babs was still a member he'd hate to hear anyone say that :D ). Petrol turbos are just more fun!

I managed 145mph in my VRS in Germany, it felt very very stable between 110 and 130, you can see why the police favoured them as mid-range pursuit cars. I still got overtaken by a Porsche Panamera though... god knows what he must've been doing but it made me look like I was doing 30mph :o

Mine is good at 30 in 5th. get it remapoped properly and it will happily sit in 5th throu town at 30. till the next set of lights that is.

they were booked at 149mph, as std mine did 145 on Brawdy airfield once lol, didnt take all the runway neither, but i wimped out.

Since putting the std airbox back on I am now getting 40+ mpg on the drive home from Bristol to Thornhill(Cardiff) most gained in the 50 zone but before with the CAI I strugglede to get 37mpg and I drove slower with it on. now I can put cruise on at 68-70.

Diesel stinks thio and the black smoke is shocking. Lorry Fuel!

Oh n Whats happened to babs?

Ive pushed it once before on the drive home and typically they shut the M48 into cardiff so had to go round to get fuel, OMG my arse was clenched as it said I had 0 mile left at the M48 turn(j29) managed nearly 10 mile to the station lol, it did take 61+ liters of fuel tho which is about the max lolmust of only been 1l left in there.

My PD1.9 sets the 'refuel' warning on at around 120(city)-150(highway)km range remaining. I have never filled it with less than 50 km range remaining and at that point it takes 55 litres (ie, a tankful to the brim, Ok there is some in the tube, but that's a pretty small reserve). So out of habit and being adverse to bleeding injectors on the side of the road in the dark, I start looking for fuel around 100km range. I feel the Skoda drops very quickly in the last 1/4 tank. I'm used to running fuel tanks to 'empty' on the guage from my duel fuel ford driving days where running up to 20 kms on '0' range was predictably safe. NOT IN THE SKODA!.

Having tracked my fuel usage with a spreadsheet for over 2 years now, I can confirm that the mpg reading from the MFA is usually between 6 and 7% inaccurate. The range is as described, depends how your driving at the time. A much better way to do it, is measure your own usage then have an idea in your head of how many miles you get to a tank with your usual driving style. Your brain is far more flexible and powerful than the MFA ;)

I'm not advocating "running on fumes", but the TDis do have self-bleeding injectors, once you get fuel to them. What the cars signally lack is a manual priming pump so if you run them out, be prepared for lots [several minutes] of starter churning to refil the fuel line..

Well, the first time I've got Skoda I used to get myself into trouble a couple times having trusted to what I've seen on a screen. It still shown 20 when I was already out of fuel!

After some time I realized that the guage moves faster in the beginning and the ending of the scale, to mention, in the very ending it's blazingly fast! While being in the middle it seems like it's frozen tho.

I found out once I get 12 miles from normal steady driving once it hits 0 and then it runs out!

61Litres? A tank in the vRS is 55L so you must have been empty lol.

I think the tank must taper quite a bit at the bottom so if the gauge is based on a fuel level the level drops much quicker in the last 20 litres or so.

yea its a 55l tank with a 7l reserve then maybe 1l in the neck.

I know Ive never had to put that much in since. I norm fill up when the light comes on and it takes around the 50l mark

not reccomended tho, I dont prolong the time between fills now.
