Win 7 lock up

Featured Replies

Now then ,gents -my win7 ult problem .---It installs ok , updates ok etc etc .Then one day ,it locks up after a period of time .Reboot -time gets shorter ,till it's down to about instant start screen then lock .

Have run Avast on the drive ,and Malwarebytes from my XP partition -no problems ,as is there with Superantispyware from XP . xoftspy on win 7 finds no problems .Tried PCtools firewall ,then Zone alarm -still same .Only thing that seems to partially cure problem is using ccleaner .-gets rid of garbage ,but no registry funnies .System 2.8Gb AMD ,with 2meg Ram .Only other possibility is way HDD is set up . I originally had Win2k & XP on my 80Gb drive ,with a small HDD to keep data ,like programs on . I then added a 400GB ,stuck Win7 trials on it with a store of 280Gb ,now git win 7 ULT on with the DOS store .

So -got w2k (NTFS) + XP on hdd0 ,and win7 + dos store on HDD1 .Boot is on Win7 ( from admin tools) .

Do I need to bite the bullet and sort out partitions correctly with DOS/WIN2K /xp on the big drive ,and Win 7 on the 80GB? ,OR IS THERE ANOTHER PROBLEM .

Could the machine be overheating?

Could the machine be overheating?

Speedfan ( on my XP partition) says no,won't run on win7 ) , XP runs as well as a good XP installation should ( but nothing like Win 7).CPU, warm to hand , both HDD cold( double fan cooling) , graphics card cold ( FX5200 has additional fan =cold .Extra fans front/rear and rear half way up , front pulling in ,rear sucking out .Mobo heatsinks warm .Got one side of case off at mo -and legs ( in shorts are getting cold from fans) :smirk:

Only clue is plenty of errors in System admin ,and fact that for a short spell after running ccleaner all is well .If it was something like a prog in Basic etc ,I suggest a jump is failing to return .Possibly someone can tell me which sys errors to look out for and which cause /indicate lockups .Tempted to try yet another format/re install and this time only install basics .

In case it happens elsewhere ,looks like I've tracked it down to "optional " downloads from MS -possibly Nvidia graphics drivers / HP upgrades .Got an upgrade from Nvidia that worked ,and a different upgrade from MS , system then recognised my monitor and graphicscard ,and all "looks " ok.
