cable route

Featured Replies

Hello... I am looking for advice on running a cable from inside the car through to the engine compartment . Anyone suggest if there is an easy way or if there are already spare cables in place. The car is a 2001 Octavia 1.9td.

Thanks.. KF.

Hi, there's definitely no spare cables but, there's plenty of free space on the firewall / convenient locations to exit a cable into the engine bay etc. I'd just pick the most convenient location, drill a new hole, slap some waxoyl on it or something to prevent corrosion of the exposed metal, and a wee rubber grommit the right size (10mm drill bit, 10mm grommit big enough?) to prevent chaffing of the wire or fumes entering the cabin.

With one caveat i guess, i wouldn't drill within an inch of any bends / shapes in the bulkhead. One drill hole's unlikely to affect structural integrity but there's still so many places to choose from it makes sense to err on the side of caution?

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the quick reply.. Seems a good option to drill a new, safe area hole for the purpose. I had thought of running the cable adjacent to the bonnet pull cable which looked accessible . However I agree that the drill should do the job fine.. Thanks again.. KF

Depending on the size of the cables that need to pass through the grommet but there is IIRC a grommet behind the glovebox that you can pass a couple of cables through (mine were parking sensor cables and were about 5mm diameter each).

That sounds perfect. I will have a look and hopefully find the grommet you mention this evening. I intend to use 2 x 5mm cables myself..

Thanks for the advice. KF.
