Show me your bush

Featured Replies

Anyone got a pics of a steering rack bush in place from a good angle/s, OE or polys doesn't really matter

The more the merrier please

It appears mine has shat itself inside out

its all the violant driving lol,

I am thinkin of puttin the Powerflex one on that I got years ago but never fitted lol. dont know what diff it will make tho.

are you still on the std rack? or did you manage to get the TT one sorted?

Back on the standard rack again lol

The TT one exploded and I couldn't be arsed messing around with it again so I chucked it in the stingys, the bush in question is a powerflex one which has lasted about 3 years

Was that the cause of your rattling mate?

Mine has got worse. Taking it to another bloke at the weekend for a 2nd opinion on whether its the driveshaft CV joint or not

Hmmmm

I think it is

Mine is now a nice cracking noise when booting in 1st 2nd or even 3rd sometimes, especially bad when turning right which makes sense as the rack bush is on the left so all the pressure is on it when turning right. If I'm gentle its ok but the minute I do anything harsh its off again. It does it under braking as well, a little bit concerning if I'm honest !!!

Had my mate on the floor earlier and theres loads of movement in the rack and virtually no bush under neath it and the top under the u clamp type thing (lol) is mashed right up

The steering rack bush was the one thing I forgot to have a good look at when I had the car up to do an oil change last weekend

Ah well, hopefully this guy will spot the problem on Saturday. It's gone from only doing it occasionally to now doing it every time I turn the wheel (left or right) in 1st or 2nd gear

I had mine on a four post ramp the day before for half hour and no one metioned it then, it was my mate who pointed it out

i did mine recently with a superpro bush when i fitted my tt rack and subframe, its easy to change off the car, not sure if you can do without dropping subframe however, can do pic if it helps?

only thing as with all polybushes is that they are a bit more a pain to fit as they dont flex as much, getting clamp over was bit tighter.

I always insist on lots of lube in this type of scenario ;)

Well the mystery continues on mine... took it to the guy yesterday morning (ex Skoda mechanic) and he had a listen and immediately said "coil spring", but I pointed out I'd already checked the springs, and a garage had checked them too, he checked them just to be sure and they weren't cracked. It's not the steering rack bush and he doesn't reckon it's the driveshaft CV joints as it's more of a bonging than a rotational clunking.

He did say he could rotate the coil springs slightly so his theory is that it's the top mounts, apparently they may have a bearing race which can be worn although he's only seen it once before. Now I think I have to make a decision whether to just get the topmounts looked at and replaced or go the whole hog and get coilovers as he said the whole suspension has seen better days.

my approach is on our age/mileage cars to replace all consumable parts as and when.

As you know i have done pretty much all you can do the octavias suspension (except rear bushes which will be done needed or not) and its a different car.

If you car is used for spirited driving, why rely on old/tired suspension.

Top mounts of course should be done with colies, and you know you wanna get those weitecs on there!!!

Even if that (worse case scenario) doesnt fix the problem, you will have stopped a future problem with the suspension occuring and had the pleasure of driving round with decent suspension.

You know what Simons is like now so you have seen the kit in action! even though mine was a little harsh for the crappy roads in Italy, i still dont regret it for a second

The noise on mine is another tie rod which has popped due the the rack bouncing about because I fitted the wrong bush back in my noob days lol

Mine is pretty good now bar the noise of the borked arm, much quiter though due to the tight rack not allowing as much movement, new arm on next week, and then I'll get my car that I bought back ........Finally

The bearing was knackered on my top mount, a symptom is heavy steering towards the end of the racks reach, tbh I think my other side is due as well

HTH ;)
