VRs rear tyre noise

Recommended Posts

I bought my 2008 VRs TDi estate in December last year and all was well. By February there was a noise which sounded like a bearing going. When i took it to the dealer they fobbed me off saying it was tyre noise. They had it in another twice and replaced a rear bearing. Unfortunately it made very little difference to the annoying noise and it still makes it. Does anyone else have the same problem?

May well find that thee tyres are out of shape. Get down and have a look at the tyre...has it worn evenly?

If it hasn't then a trip for a 4 wheel alignment may be needed to check/reset the camber angles. And some new tyres, avoid Dunlop though as they seem to suffer far more than others for going out of shape on the rear of Octy's.

Had this on mine, as have a load of people here. One of my rears was shaped like a 50p when it came off - couldn't really spot it when on the car but obvious when off.

New set of tyres, noise vanished - was incredibly loud just before the tyre swap, was bliss afterwards :)

New tyres ( pref asymetric like potenza reo50a ), full alignment check and use the correct pressures and regularly monitor pressures and alignment and i'll bet it doesnt come back......

Thanks for all your replies.

Took it back to the dealer again and complained once more. They agreed to have geometry checked at local specialist. When I went to pick it up the service manager came for a chat. The outcome was that he had found a memo from Skoda from 5yrs ago!! It stated that the rear suspension set up was found to wear rear tyres on the inner edge and this then caused tryre noise. The more the wear, the more noise etc. When my car returned they found that the specialist, they had set it up to the factory setting which was wrong!! It had to go back again for resetting to the Skoda recommended angles from the memo.

Tyres were swapped front to rear but now they make even more noise and can also feel vibrations through steering and brakes.

Tyres are Dunlop SportMaxx and still have 5mm tread. Can't really afford to change them yet.

Settings which specialist had were rear camber -1deg 49min. and toe 0deg 7min. Skoda setting (correct) -1deg 20min camber and 0deg 6min toe

Will keep updated.

Any other tyre recommendations please?

I am in the same position, 2 new tyres after 7,000 miles, 2 more at 12,000

The dealer (Rainworth) fobbed me off with the same 5 year old memo, they said (JT - Owner) that there is no point in them pursuing Skoda, as they get the same response everytime, NO WARRANTY. They suggested I log a complaint with SUK, which I did 2 weeks ago, I have had several calls from them advising me they are still looking into it.

I changed from the awful Dunlops to Vredestains & had the Rear Toe changed at Wheels in Motion, all is good now, the rears have been on for 6,000+ & no saw toothing.

We all need to complain loudly to SUK about the Dunlops !

The more that do, the more chance we have of getting some recompense.

cheers

G

  • 4 weeks later...

Hi all (short time lurking, first time posting :))

Same problem here as well, fobbed off with the cheap and non matching tyres excuse :/ (mine had 2 uniroyals on the front and 2 events on the rear)

The dealer agreed to reimburse for front wheel alignment as there is also a strong pull right when putting your foot down... turns out as well as the front wheels being out, the rear ones are on the original setting (and also the toe was out).

Did you find it made much difference to the noise from just the camber change? i.e. if it can be noisy on new tyres as well, with the original camber specs? Or just became noisy as the tyres wore down?

I now have 4 uniroyals (kept the old ones as they have many many more miles in them), but it's still just as noisy though - so I'm not sure if it's the amount of noise 'expected' or something else (checked at the dealers and everything is apparently mechanically fine)

Cheers,

M
