Due a brake fluid change - any advice?

Featured Replies

My MY08 Octy vRS TFSi is (according to the sticker in the window) due a brake fluid change. Is it? The car has covered just over 16.6k miles. If it is due how much am I looking at having to shell out? I normally go to a stealer but would be interested if anyone around Leeds or Shipley area knows a good indy garage that they trust.

I had my changed at the second service but mine was free servicing when I bought it. They recommend every two years

Are you sure it is every 2yrs? Just had mine done at 4yrs - 3rd variable service at 46k. Been dealer serviced since I bought it at 1yr old and this is the 1st time they said it was recommended.

Mine is an Elegance - is the VRS different?

Have the brake oil tested foc and see if it needs doing, mine never after 2 years and a lot of miles.

The brake fluid change is every 2 years regardless of mileage. Mileage is irrelevant for brake fluid, as it soaks up moisture in the atmosphere whether being used or not thus degrading performance over time with an ever lowering boiling point.

You do need to request it though, as the dealers do generally not know if its been done already.

Or conversley, my dealer recommends it every time I go anywhere near their service counter.....along with an air-con re-charge!!!

So how much should I be paying?

So how much should I be paying?

i paid an extra £37 for my brake fluid change at my last service

Having a Fabia VRS I do my own brake fluid changes, every two years no matter what mileage reads.

I use 1 Litre of recommended DOT 4 brake fluid, a length of rubber pipe, a jam jar, and a friend.

Bleed rear brake nipples first, then nearside front and lastly offside front.

Takes about 15/20minutes counting jacking-up each wheel at-a-time.

Not forgetting to top-up master cylinder as you go from wheel-to wheel.

Garage charges £35 to £50.

If DIY, brake fluid 1 Litre DOT 4 about a £5.00 + buy your friend a pint next time you meet up. CHEAP JOB.
