On variable service you need a oil that meets VW spec 504.00 for petrol engines and 507.00 for diesel.

Oil seems to be getting quite complicated lately, with manufacturers specifying their own oil specs. The Skoda handbook isn't the plainest English it could be either.

I would suggest for the best engine life and performance - run the engine on fully synthetic oil, which is the VARIABLE requirement, but I would personally change it every 12 months and not leave it longer.

The Skoda dealer will probably be selling SHELL HELIX ULTRA 5w - 30 Fully Synthetic. This is the oil my dealer sells and I expect many of the other dealers do as well.

Or - you can go into Halfrauds and you will find there are now lots of different oils formulated to manufacturers specs. I can't remember the container colour; but there is a fully synthetic formulated for VAG spec, which is the right one for the 1.8Tsi petrol engine you've got in your car.

I'm sure that Mobil 1 as the market leader for some years in fully synthetic meets the spec; but I haven't checked out the writing on the container. Hope this helps.

I have today purchased from my local ASDA store, in Bournemouth, 6 litres of :-

Mobil FULLY SYNTHETIC engine oil 5w30 ESP

Mobil Oil 5 litres - 505510742843 price - £32.00

Mobil Oil 1 litre - 505510742503 Price - £ 8.50

I consider these prices to be reasonable in view of some of the prices others are asking.
