hi and please help

Featured Replies

hi to everyone

i just bought my second skoda favorit.

my first was an lxie now i have a glxi blackline. L reg

the car has several problems and i'm hoping someone here will be kind enough to guide me through trying to sort them out.

first, the headlights don't always switch off straight away even after the keys are removed from the ignition.

next the washer system seems to leak, i filled the bottle up and pressed the stalk and water just drained onto the road.

also, the back drivers side door is permanently shut and won't open from the inside or outside.

as well the horn doesn't sound.

and the drivers side front fog doesn't come on, checked the bulb and it was ok.

and finally the speedometer reads over the actually speed, so if i'm doing about 60 it reads as 75 or 80 etc.

any suggestions would really really be appreciated.

thanks

Horn not sounding and washer problem are the main ones to worry about as they are an MOT fail. Washer system leak is probably either the pump or the washer tube. This should become obvious when looking at the source of the leak. Get someone to squirt the washer while you look. Replacing the horn is quite easy but is hampered by the need to remove the radiator - if done carefully should be doable without draining or damaging coolant system. Check the fuse for the horn, the horn switch (i.e. is power getting to the horn), and clean the electrical contacts. A new horn is cheap enough from Jorily.com

Headlights will stay on all day and all night (well until the battery dies) and ignition does not control the headlights as on other cars. So long as they do turn off I wouldn't worry so much about that for now. They should come off once the switch button has come out after pressing it, and either way extinguish once the sidelights are also turned off.

Fog lights - I can't remember if each side shares the same fuse or not. If they don't it may just be a fuse, if they do probably electrical contacts need cleaning (sand paper/electrical contact spray). I found the slightest amount of corrosion on the connectors was enough to make the bulbs completely dark even though power was getting there.

Speedometers generally do over-read speeds - 10 to 15mph over is a bit much over though. I'd certainly expect no more than 10mph over-read at the higher end. Do you have correct size wheels and tyres fitted (165/70/r13 or equivalent I think) and have you checked the pressures? If all else fails it ma be worth checking there are no kinks in the speedo drive cable and that the gear oil is at a sufficient level (a few mm off the bottom of the speedo drive used as sort of a dipstick).

Back door will be the pull rod for the outside handle has broken, and I am guessing the child lock is on preventing the door being opened from the inside (does the inside handle give any resistance when you pull?). An easy fix once the door is open but not quite sure how to go about getting it open.

thanks anewman

that's all very very helpful.

hopefully it will be the easier of all the options to fix everything.

i read on a nother forum that one way to try and release the rear door was to cut away the door card to get to the mechanism.

but the central locking seems to work and the outside handle does pull al the way up, band their is click when you pull it. although it does seem a bit weak?

the door release inside has also come away completely, i mean it's no longer attached to anything.

i think the door will be the hardest to sortout.

maybe a replacement card from the scrappy will be needed.

many many thanks again for taking the time and trouble to answer my post.

just to add.

the washer problem was a disconnected headlight washer pipe. the water was just being pumped straigt onto the ground, easy fix.

there was also a lot of knocking coming from the rear, a friend said it could be the exhaust is loose.

so i took it to kwikfit for thme to look at and they couldn't find anything loose. but the exhaust did still have a lot of play in it, so the guy put a bend in the heat shield so it touched the exhaust and now htere's no knocking, and he did it for free.

very happy now.

thanks

Kwikfit looked at an old car and didn't want to condemn the brakes, shock absorbers and exhaust and empty your wallet for the privelige?! :o Must be one of the few decent branches!
