Introduction! Head Unit difficulties!

Featured Replies

Hello, I've joined this forum really through searching for a solution to problems in fitting a new Kenwood Head Unit to my Fabia. All was working well, despite some difficulties pushing the cage into the gap left by the original tape/radio, until I tried to follow the advice on these forums for swapping the red and yellow wires to get permanent power (i.e. to switch on the CD player without the ignition being on). Since then the HU has gone dead, despite the red security LED blinking when the face is off.

I've put the old tape/radio back in, which works fine. I may have blown a fuse, but the radio fuse looks OK. I've read somehwere about the s-contact in the ignition, but don't know if this might be a problem or not.

Can anyone suggest anything?

Thanks.

God, you sound like a really miserable guy! Lighten up - it's not all about problems you know.

OK, I just felt a bit embarrased...everyone else has flash Fabia vRS cars and I only have a lowly 1.4 8v Classic Estate! But I'm very proud of it.

Yeh, you've probably got kids to cart around and tight budget to keep to!

Hey, I'm enjoying this internet chat thing - never done that before.

Cant help you out with your head unit difficulties I'm afraid. (couldnt be arsed with it myself so paid someone to do it) but welcome to the boards anyway

Thats a sign of madness you know.

Whereabouts are you?

There may be someone local with a multimeter who can assist

If you have a live supply and an earth something should happen.

If not then the set has a fault.

Ringwood, Hampshire.

Kenwood, eh? My one came with a simple 2 into 1 ISO connector. If you've never had it come live, are you sure you have the ISO at the ISO end in the correct way around? I got it wrong once and blew a fuse... actually two! :o

Oh, and the cage thing, I found the best way to continue when it got a bit stiff to shove in, was a bit of timber and a hammer ;) Also I noticed the bottom of the cage was cutting into the grooves on top of the glasses tray under it - I also cut off these bits that the cage had started to peel off, and it went a lot better. :D

But really, there's nothing that should stop that Kenwood working fine. You have the fascia plate? :)

Thanks for the response...Yep I have the fascia plate and I've shaved off the grooves on top of the , so the age has gone in. I had the Kenwood unit working until I tried to switch the yellow and red wires to emulate the original set up of being able to use the thing without the ignition on. Along the way I had problems with the loss of memory as described in other forums here, but I managed to sort that.

I'm using a wire adapter from Halfords. So really all I want to do is now get back to where I was before. I do wonder if I've blown a fuse, but I haven't found a blown one yet - the radio fuse is fine.

I'm getting frazzled about this.

Oh Happy Day...I looked again at the fuse box and no. 10 (for the s-contact) had blown. I changed it and my head unit is back up and working. I thought it must be a fuse (and prayed it was nothing more serious). Now I'm back on track and I'll try fiddling again.

I found on another forum mention that the no.10 fuse had caused some problems - so thanks, whoever that was for the tip.
