Drop links

Featured Replies

Was out on the drive again last night...................

replaced the poly roll bar bushes or the standard ones as I can't stand the squeeking.

Whilst there I noticed the bar end of the drop links are very floppy.

Now I still have a knock (Yes Chicken it's still there lol)

Am I thinking right that the floppy ends could be causing this. I may as well replace the link anyway as if they are floppy it means there going anyway I guess.

Somebody convince me lol

Floopy is not good as they say....

Drop links are main cause for the front end knocking.

You can test them by getting someone to rock car up and down on wing whilst you hold the drop link fron placing hand inside wheel.

I found this very noticable.

Also sometime drop links get loose as there is not much torque on them  .

fitted R32 ones on mine. Direct replacement

i asked this question a while ago...and R32 ones different?Or are they only different if you buy them from dealers (as in motor factors sell them as "universal ones to fit Skoda/Audi/VW etc?)

The cause of my knocking was a loose droplink...changed that now and its sooo smooth now :D ... well it was until i fitted coilovers and slammed it...now im getting a banging at the front when going over bumps...think the ARB is hitting wishbones..DOH!

Still got that noise then!?

The conclusion for mine was the top mounts have gone so the coil springs are rotating in the mounts which is causing a bong noise (like a snapped coil spring) when turning at low speeds. Not sure if you've checked that on yours yet but the guy that did mine found with a bit of effort he could turn the coil springs by hand and you're not supposed to be able to do that. Getting coilovers and new top mounts fitted in a weeks time

Think that dealers may show same p/n for VRS and R32 drop link but aftermarket the R32 ones are thicker and better made than the VRS ones..

Anyone know which way round the links fit ??

Is it big thread up top or down the bottom ???

Really can't remember off hand but you will see which way (think small thread at bottom) as the threads will catch if it's the wrong way.

The shorter of the two should be put on the Arb if i remeber right.

This provents any rubbing from the end of the thread on inside of the cars piping

Yeah short thread to bottom,as said above if long thread at bottom you will bust your pancake pipe.

Agree with that as neally did this in the past.

The thicker thread should be to bottom(ARB) it there is a difference. Some none OEM drop links have very thin threads and are c**p.

The thicker end should also be the slightly shorter thread

trying to track down some front end knocking on my vrs myself (only noticeable when going over bumps at low speeds) and the drop links sound like they could be the problem.

could any of you guys point me in the right direction of where to pick up a new set?

is it best to stay with standard skoda parts or go aftermarket?

thanks very much

Looking good billy ray ......................

I bought cheap motor factor one for about and tenner each iirc the vag ones are around £30 each

I don't expect the factor ones to last forever mind you.

HTH

feeling good fatty...

cheers for that mate. just out of interest, did they stop the knock?

No it didn't

But the car still feels tighter for the new links

I ain't done off side yet though so maybe it will then. I doubt it though as the knock is nearside.

tried anything else/got any ideas as to what else might be doing it?

The actual bushes can make the bar rattle, could be your top mounts, or ball joint.

time for a good old poke around under the car it seems - cheers for that fatty

i am having the same problem with mine loud knocking over bumps more so as the weight of the car is coming down on the suspension after speed bumps especialy, it started with just the left but now the right is knocking away, i also noticed that when pulling away there is a creaking noise coming from the front but only if the car is dry never happens when its raining, could this also be drop link related or yet another problem? also (and dont laugh at me!) what is a drop link and where can i find it to replace and is it something i could do myself or would it be best to take it to a garage? im not that mechanically minded!
