Clunking noise from drive shaft

Featured Replies

I hear a clunking noise when changing gears or when I slow down and speed up again, when I turned off the engine and left the car in gear and pull it up and down I can see that the shaft turns before the gearbox cv joint maybe it is this, I cant really pinpoint the noise, could it be the gearbox itself?

Depends how much play there is - there is always a bit of play in inner and outer CVs, but obviously if it's excessive then it's a problem. Usually though outer CVs 'click' and inner ones make for quite a bit of vibration when accelerating.

Unlikely to be the gearbox, I'd think - there isn't anything in there that could have that much play and still function properly.

Ok thanks ill try and look more closely

If it's clunking when you go on or off the power or change gear, I'd think of a worn engine mount or tiebar, rather than a driveshaft.

I had a similar problem to this, it would clunk whenever I came onto or off power (applied torque to the wheels) if that makes sense?

Took it a garage and it turned out to be loose wheel nuts allowing the wheels to move slightly creating a clunking sound. Took them 5 seconds with their airgun to sort it (and cost me 2 pints!) :wonder:

HTH.

Yes that was the first thing I checked I put a piece of thick rubber where it would hit,but no cigar.

I don`t know...., I have to replace the clutch and pressure plate soon,so I`ll take a proper look when everything is out.

It doesn't have to be the block moving far enough to hit the back/side of the bay; it could be the securing bolt in an eyebush hitting the eye, or the solid parts of a coshion mount banging together.

The other usual possibility would be the exhaust banging someplace.

Not yet.

Turned out it was the engine mount.
