Best way to DIY spray std alloys gloss black

Featured Replies

Thinking of giving it a go. Any tips?? Thanks in advance :)

Would imagine removing tyre, sanding down to remove existing lacquer, one layer, maybe 2 of primer, then the same with gloss black paint, then lacquer, leave 24 hours, flat off with wet & dry, another lacquer, flat off with wet & dry, then polish. :)

im giveing it ago in a few weeks i will do a how to

Don't try removing the tyre yourself, you'll never manage it (at least I didn't, even after sawing all the way through the sidewall, lol). I guess the key with any painting job is preparation and cleanliness.

Any recommended places near banbury?

soz no as im miles away...but it will be a very tedious job trying to do oem vrs wheels your self...for the sake of £150 ish if u can afford i'd take the powder coating route..

Just make sure your preperation is all in order. Sand down enough to remove as much paint as you can handle. Make sure the area is clean before you start spraying and do lots of thin coats rathere than 2 thick ones. You will get a better finish then. Try and get as many coats of lacure as possible as they take some bashing from stones etc.. Going to do mine soon, im just going to mask off the tire :-)

ive painted my 205 wheels myself !

and wheels on the few williams clios that i owned !!!

i didnt even take the tyre off !

just remove the wheel from the car and mask it very neat and tidily around the tyre !

as said before paint as you would paint your front grille for example !

just dont go mad with the paint to avoid drips !

do it in a dust free environment !

and dont drive straight away to allow paint to harden !

the wheels will not be as robust as powdercoating them !

but you could do them yourself 2/3 times for the price of one powder coating !

heres an example of some wheels i did myself without removing the tyre !
