Fitting DLR's to Mk2. vRS

Featured Replies

I promise I have used the search - I just cannot find the threads.

I think there has been at least two threads about people fitting some DLR's to a Mk2. Octy.

Can anyone post me a link to the threads?

Want to see how difficult it is as I'm tempted....

Ta

I don't understand the obsession with DRL. When my vRS is delivered I will be turning them off until they have to be on legally. Putting them on a car which never had them anyway seems even stranger to me. IMHO

It all a matter of choice Moley

AND

They are legal now!!

They always have been legal, but unless you drive in bright sunlight they are a major distraction which has been proved across several non EU countries where DRLS are now banned due to an increase in accidents as the number of cars with them increased. Austria is the latest to totally ban their use, I wonder who will be next. I have also disabled the DRL function on my Superb, so at least I am not likely to be a distraction to other motorists.

I'm sorry and I don't mean this to cause anyone any offence as its just my opinion.

But if people think that DRL's are too bright/distracting/cause accidents then I think they need to either have their eyes tested or re-take their driving test. I see loads of cars coming towards me with them on and never fail to notice bikers/cyclists/pedestrians.

It baffles me how people can say they didn't see a bike because of a strip of LED's. :S

Just my tuppence and as I said no offence intended.

Where is the legislation on this?

It has become a requirement on new cars.

But where does it say you cannot install them onto older vehicles?

I never said it was illegal what I can't understand is why they are retrofitted to cars that don't legally have to have them, it seems like the new chrome windscreen washer chavvy upgrade to me. All in my opinion of course. :)

Until I am shown proper proof that DRLs cause a danger mine are staying on. I started driving round with the headlights on years ago and noticed that fewer people were pulling out on me, and if they've noticed me, then hopefully it means they are now paying attention to whatever is behind me on the road too, whether or not they are "lit up like a christmas tree"

There have been lots of studies on DRLs and as per usual statistics are used to bend the truth to the viewpoint of the person writing the study (this applies to both sides of the DRL camp).

For eample, one of the studys I looked at showed that there was an increase in the number of accidents on the road after DRLs started being used, however, it also convientently overlooked the fact that although the number of accidents on the road had gone up by about 5% the number of vehicles on the road had gone up by about 16% in the same time period.

Therefore, the number of accidents per vehicle on the road had actually reduced, but because the author of the study was against DRLs they concentrated only on the headline figure of the number of accidents going up.

There are lies, damn lies and then there are statistics!!!

Interesting, but are people retrofitting for safety reasons?

Probably not emoticon-0100-smile.gif

However, I have a Fl vRS and they came with the car so I use them instead of dipped headlights during the day and have upgraded the dipped headlights to Philips Xtreme and because my headlights are no longer on all the time don't mind if they don't last quite as long as standard bulbs (I have spare bulbs in the glovebox just in case)

Seems sensible

As i used to drive round with my headlights on all the time this formed the main reason for me retrofitting them.

Yes i admit i also like the look of them but my main reason was to stop using my headlights all the time and just have the DRL on instead.

Here is a pic of my DRL's taken from the front & from the viewpoint of another driver.

They are the same brightness as OEM DRL's fitted to a neighbours Audi A5.

Now unless your blind how does that stop you seeing what is around the car? As you can see from the pics nothing is being hidden in a blaze of light!

So now i just drive around with these on rather than the headlights which will save the Xenon Bulbs

Personally I find xeons more distracting than DRL's, I hate being followed by a car with them, especially if they are set up wrong!
