OEM Bluetooth & OS4

Featured Replies

Hi all, had the OEM bluetooth kit retrofitted soon after I bought the car, been great apart from the lack of MFSW. Have used a nokia 6230i, Blackberry storm and since last december an iPhone 3Gs. All worked fine, downloaded the os4 for the iPhone last night and since then bluetooth works but cant access the contact list, dialled numbers etc. via the car. Also for the past few months there seems to be an intermitent problem, when I press the stalk button to enter the phone menu it 'jumps' straight in to the contacts sub menu instead of stopping in the phone main menu, I have ruled out a mechanical stalk problem as this does not happen in any of the other maxidot menus. Any advice? Have others found these problems?

Hi

Same problems as you

I have a Harman Becker bluetooth kit supplied by VRStu and worked fine with various phones. Got iPhone 3Gs version 3.1.3 and was OK

Updated to OS4 and lost contact details.

Updated again to OS4.0.1 (itunes) and still the same

Deleted pairing and re paired.

Still wont read address book

Removed bluetooth unit fron car power supply and re installed

Still no good

Went to 02 shop and they havent a clue so I am stuck with it for another

21 months unless someone knows a way round it!!!!!

As for your other problem I had similar in that the phone menus jumped and the wipers would wipe on their own without rain as I have auto wipers

Took it to main dealers and they repalced stalk. All OK since then

Thanks for the info splinter. I might try and get a new stalk fitted to the car and see if this helps, I doubt they are expensive. As fot the iPhone I am going to try and revert back to the os3 operating system as this worked fine...not sure yet how I am going to be able to do that though!

No problems with my Fiscon and contacts with IOS4... Not updated to 4.0.1 yet though

I have the Parrot CK300 - very basic BT car kit and it works fine with my iPhone 4 IOS 4 and 4.0.1 no problems. However, note that I use a Brodit iPhone mount near the steering wheel and drive all Sat Nav, Audio and Telephone through that.

It is all at my finger tips from the steering wheel, great display and very responsive, so I saw no point in replicating it in the car.

No Problem with iPhone 4 on iOS 4.0.1

I have the same issues with my iPhone 4.

I hopefully have solved the problem though - I'm buying a Yeti with the latest factory GSM unit!

It is rather an expensive way to fix the issue though......

Yesterday Apple didn't acknowledge this problem, said it was down to the car makers to keep up with the latest tech, and that I should get my BT upgraded.

Today, they said they are working on a fix!!

Hassle them, the more of us that do - the quicker this will happen.

Having put my reading glasses on, the Yeti has the GSM 11 unit. Hurrah!

Hopefully this will mean that the Iphone will work properly with the Yeti.

Add another on to this list! I've a 3GS which worked fine prior to OS4 (& 4.0.1!)

Mine does show contacts & recent calls, however the names are just garbled symbols (numbers are correct). The ones i programmed into the Columbus memory are fine however. I also find that is disconnects from the BT and then reconnects a couple of times on a long journey. Again, never did this before OS4

T3 are also listing a lot of concern over OS4 BT. So we are not alone!

I also find that is disconnects from the BT and then reconnects a couple of times on a long journey.

I have had the same disconnection problem with both the 3GS running 3.1.3 and iOS4 and now my iPhone 4 on 4.0.1, regardless of journey length, since I bought the phones,

I don't want to get too excited, but I updated my iPhone 3GS to 4.1 this morning & I now have the phonebook working with my Columbus!

When I first connected it, the phone book still appeared garbled, :-( so this is what i did:

"Forgot" the Skoda BT in the iPhone options & Re-paired it (phone book still looked garbled)

on iPhone BT settings switched off the "sync contacts"

On the Columbus I got a message, new "phone book", but the screen then showed there were no entries at all.

I then switched off the Columbus & in the iPhone settings swithched the "sync contacts" to on.

I then turned on the ignition/Columbus and allowed the BT to connect. Up came the usual "connecting user",

Once it was connected I check the recent calls, and they were correct & had the correct persons name on them! Good start! But no entries in the phone book showed up. After about 5 minutes message apeared, "new phonebook available" and all was as it should be! Correct names and numbers! Guess it took a while as I've a rather full phone book!

Now providing 4.1 prevents the frequent disconnects/re-connects, i'll be very happy!

Unfortunately Apple has a policy of liking their products to operate within a 'walled garden'. Everything is designed to work with another Apple product - your iPhone connects to iTunes installed on your MacBook which connects to your iPod etc etc. This has advantages in that it makes it easier to design and secure (the main reason why Macs are more stable), and also to make it relatively idiot proof.

The issue comes when you need to use Apple products with other systems, it works almost by accident. Just try to use iTunes on Windows, or in this case, use iPhone over Bluetooth. Apple's implementation of Bluetooth is horribly crippled, because Bluetooth traditionally has access to parts of the phone that Apple doesn't want it to use. This means that you often get odd side effects and random problems, because it just isn't something they're worried about.

TL;DR: Bluetooth won't work properly until Apple sorts out the implementation on the iPhone, which it won't do because then a non-Apple product has too much funtional control over the iPhone.

I have an iPhone and love it, though some of its quirks drive me nuts, especially the need to use iTunes to add music to it. I still use it because it was the best designed 'non-business' smartphone. My upgrade is due soon, and I think I'll be looking around at other manufacturers.

Just an update, been out all day in the Octy and no random disconnects from the BT. Plus as one of the calls I recieved was from SWMBO, she was able to assess the sound quality. Her view (subjective as it was), was that the sound quality was much improved, infact she said that to start with she didn't realise it was over the handsfree, or she'd have "cut it short"!

So for now, I'm pleased with this release!

MY11 Leeds dealership informs me that this latest spec. connects to Blackberry phones which I think should be good news for iPhones too.
