It's to do with the illumination of the buttons.

Not had a stream mp3 in for a while but iirc illumi 1 was buttons & screen illuminated when headlights switched on and illumi 2 was buttons and screen illuminated all the time

IIRC one leaves the ring around the main button on when lighting is on, the other only when the unit is in use.

The only reason I could think of is so you can see the power button to turn the unit on, when it's not in use, it's dark and the lights are off.
