save your money buy a forge or pro alloy one

im pretty confident that the oem sidemount will perform just as good as 99% of them ebay frontmounts

go to forge direct and ask them for a price ;)

I have to agree that if you want quality and an easy fit go for one of them.

Dyno will tell if my Chinese one is better than the tiny stock one :)

I Agree, they look nice but in terms of peformance the plate and bar construction means that the air jus hits the front of the cooler and bounces off, crudely speaking, the cores forge/pace and also my company manufacure have a oval shapped tube which funnels the air into the fins, where the majority of th cooling occurs.

No problem - happy to help :)

Will measure it tomorrow when I take the bumper off again.

I contacted several of the Ebay sellers of similar ones to see if they would sell only the pipework but none of them replied.

Yeah i contacted a few and nobody got back to me. i think im just going to manufacture one similar to the Forge 2 pass, apparently though you have to purchase a new crash bumber, whats this all about?

Also i see you converted all the pipe work on your FMIC, which will improve your airflow and reduce the pressure drop no end, is this necessery on the forge/pace ones?.

It's worth betting money on a tube and fin core being a fair chunk more efficient than a bar and plate of equivalent size - it's no surprise why Forge, Proalloy, GRS etc use tube and fin cores ;) they have all tested lots of cores before they arrive at the ones they chose to use, they are of course more expensive.. The standard SMIC core is actually quite efficient for it's size (as long as it's in reasonable condition and all the fins aren't mashed up).

So that said, you will need a cheap bar and plate cored FMIC to be bigger than the SMIC just to keep up, and to be a significant improvement it will need to be a fair amnount bigger. There's no shortage of space in the front of the Octy so you can get a biggish core in. Once you've done that, the FMIC performance may initially look good, as it will probably have a fair heat sinking capacity due to it's size and position, but in sustained high load conditions the recovery time of the bar and plate (time it takes to cool down after it's been heated) will likely be longer than the more efficient tube and fin, and the core temperature will quietly increase due to heatsoak.

It's a case of pay your money and take your choice, for casual road use the cheap one may well be beneficial, as it will have a fair time to recover in between "blasts", but take it on the track, or use it in a more sustained fashion (if your "private road" will allow ;) ) and it's likely the performance improvement over the SMIC may not be as you expect..

Also don't put too much faith in the rolling road telling the whole story, the cooling capacity at most rolling roads isn't enough to make any intercooler work to it's potential, especially after a couple of runs when everything has heatsoaked - there's no substitute for a proper 70mph wind blowing through the front

WOOP WOOP just won a forge fmic off ebay for the tidy sum of £350 half the price

did it come with the modified crash bar ???

also i paid £530 deliverd to my door direct from forge so they dont have to be 700 from the stealers on here ;)

and imho if forge sold them all at this price direct from them there sales will boom as no one wants to pay near £700 for a coole do they !!!!!

Cheers,

its a shame you live in New Zealand as i could have give you one of my intercoolers, it would of been interesting to see the difference in performance, between the 'plate and bar ' and the 'tube and fin' :(

Never seen the point in putting a fan on an intercooler as its only really in use when the throttle is applied, which is when your moving more times then not. If anything it minimises your core face area.

yea would be more efficient to have a water spray bar on it activated from a throttle switch, its how mitsubishi do it

Or a fan that sucks through the core rather than blows, that way you could mount the fan behind the IC ;)
