swirl flaps

Featured Replies

anyone had an inlet manifold swirl flap failure on a mk2 VRS 2.0 diesel ?

seen one ingested into the cylinder and destroyed piston and head. car had 115,000 kms with full dealer history. seen another with an oil leak from the manifold just above the alternator. removed the manifold and the flaps were badly gummed up like you would see on an egr valve.

both manifolds are made of plastic, the later ones are metal with no problems.

Arggh!

I really wish I hadn't read this post!

My previous car, a 2002 (52) BMW 320d SE (E46) suffered exactly the same problem.

Needed a brand new engine, turbo and catalytic converter - just shy of £8,000.

Managed to get BMW UK to pay 50%. Turned out my £12K pride and joy ended up costing me £16K.

I won't go into detail about the worn suspension, useless window regulators, constantly failing rear lights etc, etc.

I bought my 2008 2.0L PD Scout after vowing never to pay through the nose for a premium badge ever again as the reliability and after sales care appears to be no better than the budget brands.

Please tell me my Scout has the metal manifold??

My father has a 2000 BMW 330D, someone recently informed him of the swirl flap potential failure problem, BMW customer services couldn't tell him if his vehicle could potentially suffer this failure. Luckily when he took the car to the independent BMW mechanic he uses, and was about to shell out £500 to have the redesigned parts fitted, the mechanic established his car does not have swirl flaps fitted, apparently all the BMW 330D automatic models have swirl flaps, but some manual models have them some don’t.

If the swirl flaps fail it’s new engine time and loads of money down the drain. I hope this is not going to be common problem across different manufactures!

Mine is leaking oil. How much did they charge you to repair it?

Paul

They did nothing in the end,its still leaking, still washing it off every now and then,if it get on the alternator its toast, its about £300-400 for a new one!!!!

I'd suggest you get it seen to as if they fail, they can be ingested into the engine writing it off.

FWIW silver , the PD140 in non-scout versions didn't have swirl flaps as far as I know, so you might be lucky.

Thanks cheezemonkhai, unfortunately since my original post I've bought a PD170 vRS!

I'm hoping my first bad experience with poorly designed swirl flaps was a one-off.

Do these give much problem on the pd vrs?Or is it a few rare cases?

Is it just me or does anyone else think been on this forum would put u off buying a skodA!
