How is it when i drive our Cr 170 which is not a lot by the way , i get 45 MPG and i do fracture a law or 2 on the motorway, but when the wife drives it she get 38 MPG.

She doesn't drive half as fast as me.

She so needs to read the road in future.

Laroldino :rofl::rofl:

Does she take it out of second?? :rofl:

Engine braking (and reading the road ahead as mentioned, using less brakes) is key to good fuel economy. Reading ahead quite a way was a principle taught to me during an advanced driving day a while back and I reckon it means I get an extra 5mpg compared to just braking when the need actually arises. Also whole thing about being safer, etc.

I'm getting about the same - 45mpg in the CR but still thoroughly enjoying the car. Sounds like the missus is still driving it like a petrol - high revs and no understanding of 6th gear! :rofl:

Talking about reading the road ahead - I did the full IAM course a couple of years ago, and it is excellent for reading the road ahead. In fact the test is sitting next to a police examiner giving a rolling commentary on what's happening ahead and what choices you're making in response. Certainly makes you focus on reading the road.

Yep, the technique of reading more and breaking less needs to be spread. The amount of sporadic breaking I see daily is amazing...

It only leads to people continually speeding up and slowing down, especially in traffic. So a drop in MPG is inevitable really.

Really pleased to read this. My wife drove my new car for the first time last weekend.

She didn't use 6th on the motorway at all! Dawned on me that her i10 only has 5 gears.

There is a benefit to using the brake pedal even if you're braking on the engine to tell the cars behind you that you're slowing down, same principle but more subtle as using the indicators. The first rule to fuel economy is to leave a proper gap between you and the car in front though. That one change means you have time to use the engine to control the speed (As well as giving more time to react to anything unexpected ahead too).
