de- finning the air box

Featured Replies

thats my argument, if a 225 motor uses the same box then a remapped vRS is fine on it, mine is nice now Ive put the std box and filter back on, missin the noise now tho. but I get much better MPG out of it and it feels more torque than before.

Although the BAM engine has 225 BHP and a standard airbox, the MFR is not going to fit a aftermarket air filter on the motor even if it did make more BHP. :giggle:

Does it really feel more torquey with standard airbox or is it is all in the mind :S

My motor is more torquey with a ABD CAI on it for sure.

When i put the standard airbox on the car i get hesitation but that could be the way my Map is customised with the CAI.

Just sticking a cone filter on the MAF is the worst option though as bad heat soak will happen.

although its the same box, the 225 has a 3inch inlet instead of 2.5 on the vrs so i spose it can flow abit more air just by that. btw i have a 1.8t airbox perfect for definning ans smoothing for sale in the for sale section, its of a 1.8t so same as vrs

yea but that doesnt matter really seen as the vRS has such a small pipe going into the air box. that pipe into the wing is the restrictive part. not the maf,

also Mark now you mention it mine does seem to have some slight lag but after that it does feel liek it pulls soo much harder. Ide say the BHP is down on the CAI but the torque is pos up slightly. If I get some spare cash and time up at RS tuning Ill get it rollered using both the CAI and the box n see. If I can get an R32 box too that could be a good one to see.

Your lag maybe coz you had the car mapped with the CAI and when you took the CAI off your map was slightly adrift ?.

This may also account for why your car feels more torquey as in effect when the slight hesistation clears you get on the power, so really your car may not be more torquey at all just feels it because of the lag then the rush of power wheras before you had a more constant power curve.

Probably a lot of old tosh..but hey ho.

mmm, maybe, I know I get better MPG tho and atm thats good as she is more a working car now I am ashamed to say. still try keep ontop tho. also What worried me was the crap in the CAI pipe even with the Piper X filter on it!!!!

I cleaned the filter and she went really well but afe#ter that I found the carp in the pipe so took it off.

might be better now tho as I have the std lower grills back in as either one fell out(cant see it) or some Newport scumbag stole it while I was in Rapier getting everything I needed to start at Tesco.

I have never had any cr*p in my CAI and have driven through many wet surface.

Mind you, sure it is not the Piper X falling apart, I would not put one of those filters on my motor if you paid me. Had bad experience with them and they also might be your reason for bad fuel. Get a K&N put on it

lol, yea I was thinkin that, but it looks fine, I dont know, gonna leave it as is for a while, might try get the R32 box and see.

i used to run a piperX on my old st24 and it lost me 5 bhp!! :wonder: never used one since, k&n all the time for me

Funny enough it was on my old ST24 that experience put me right off.

Heat soak really bad on those filters, The filtration is poor and they do not last :(

mmm, of top of your head what is the diam of the CAI pipe?

or MAF

Just found this and tbh it doesnt look like it will be that much of an improvement over the one we have.

also looking at it it goes through the same hole oin the vRS box?

no point Billy don't waste your money. fit the CAI back on

I remember a similar thread to this over on Civinfo.com (Civic Forum)

It turned out that fins inside airboxes are there for a reason.

They reduce the air swirling effecy hence improving delivery to the inlets. If you remove the fins, then you are reducing the efficiency!!

In an effort to minimize turbulence in the airbox Honda decided to put these vanes in the lower box.

Obviously this was not enough. They also had to put horizontal vanes in the maf tube to straighten the airstream and achieve stable voltage readings from the maf sensors.

I cant imagine that VAG cars are any different TBH

but wouldn't the turbo and 4 meteres of pipework under 1 bar of pressure negate any "swirly" effects the air box baffels have?

i think they are more for noise and filter efficiency, they do allow water to seperate if any is drawn in (changed loads of filters in the winter and seen the water collected around the fins)

second hand ones seem to fetch round about the same if not a bit more on ebay so thats not a bad price for new

Ive just measured my PX filter and its 70mm inside diamiter.

I am very confused

Hi Billy you sure...

My pipe measures 76mm (3") exactley, and is same as this one half way down the page

ABD Racing LAN Fresh air Intake System inc Filter

http://www.impossibleperformanceshop.co.uk/acatalog/1.8t_Performance.html#a187

Maybe your pipework is smaller than the ABD CAI, but means you have quite a reducer pipe from the MAF.

lol, My pipe is the same on both ends as the PX filter is one I got way back in the day for the car and it is one of them stupid ones that went straight on to the MAF. Doesnt the ABD one have a silicolne reducer to connect it to the std MAF? as its made really for the S3 / BAM engines?

unsure really but Ive checked it again n again lol just to make sure.

we will soon see as Ive ordered one from Opie Oils as I cant seem to find any filters only. everywhere seems to just do Kits.

thats the one I got.

Hi Billy you are absolutley right there buddy.

My ABD CAI is 3" (76mm) which means it is for the S3 / TT / LCR engines and so i have a reducer the other way too bring the end down to the VRS MAF.

so your 70 / 71mm for a filter would be spot on for your pipework

So re fitting the CAI then matey

Here is a few pics of my airbox drilled definned

Bottom airbox

top airbox

generalpics017.jpg

i cut my inner arch away and used a custom snorkel bottom half (i stole from a scooby shhh) and a shrouded induction kit i ran 183.7 with standard airbox and 187.2 with this system i even left the bottom of the standard box in and sat my shrouded induction kit inside it sits nice!

mmm.

Mark you need to stop showing off with that bay lol. :giggle:

at least your all set for a K04 setup lol. I am going to refit the CAI.

didnt the airbox pull in too much hot air like that tho?

All Ive done to mine is remove that trumpet. seems to do the tric lol

Cant wait to get the nice sound back tho. also Just another hijack but What colour should I paint my CAI pipe?

I am gonna sandpaper it with really fine stuff then prime it and paint but unsure as to the colour? I have Blue Autobahnn 88 pipes in there but only oune visable is the cooler to TB one.

was thionking Black too? or Green to try match the Vrs one.

Can't help it billy.

My de finned airbox was ok. those holes are only underneath the bottom of the airbox so when fitted and car moving actually gets cold air from under the car going into it

why paint your CAI pipe? it looks much better polished alloy IMO.

I can polish it for you
