Can you melt down Polyurethane bushes?

Featured Replies

Wanting to do a experiment with my gearbox mount seeing as vibra technics want 211 and a exchange for my Fabia one.

Was going to strip down the mount and set a jig and possibly pour the melted Polyurethane in?

Anyone? or will the rubber just burn

I think a lot will depend on whether the PU's solid or foamed. But in theory, if it's solid and you can get it up to 230deg C - and no more - you should be able to pour some molten PU into a suitable mould. A domestic oven would do, I suppose, for that temperature.

You'd need to make sure there were no bubbles or lamination, which could potentially happen if it cooled too quickly after pouring. Personally, I wouldn't risk it...

I reckon it will work. I've seen a few threads dotted across the web about this sort of thing. Most of which I can't find now.

Found this one: http://forum.bmw5.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=47577

One I want to find was to do with upgrading the dogbone mount. Can't find that one now though...

To aid witht he not cooling down to quickly thing... pour the stuff in the mould then put it back in the oven at 230... then turn the oven off and leave it ? it'll cool down slowly with the temp of the oven?

Alternatively get in contact with your local high school's science department see if they fancy doing an experiment for you hehe
