REPLACING ENGINE COOLANT SENSOR

Featured Replies

Right i went down to my local dealer today to see if they knew why my radiator fans were coming on while the engine was started regardless if it was cold or hot,

they told me its my engine coolant sensor, they had one in stock so i payed the £33 for the sensor but i am just wondering if this is the correct sensor they have sold me? if it is how easy is it to change this sensor as iam going to attempt to change them over tomorrow?

Not sure as I thought the fans were controlled by their own sensor which plugs into the radiator. The readings from coolant temp sensor are for the ECU and dash gauges.

The price sounds about right I had a genuine VAG one earlier this year was about £28 not inc. VAT.

It's easy to change, takes about 10 minutes

1. Take the main engine cover off (remove four sprung clips)

2. Take the smaller engine cover at the front off (remove two sprung clips) - you can now access the temp sensor

3. The temp sensor is located in the coolant pipework at the right hand side of the engine near the airbox, it has a multiplug going into it

4. Remove multiplug

5. Have new temp sensor and O-ring ready to put in otherwise you will lose a bit of coolant

6. Pull out the clip holding the old sensor in, lift the sensor up and peel out the old O-ring. Put the new O-ring and sensor in the hole before you lose coolant. Put the clip back to hold the new sensor in place

7. Replace the multiplug and re-fit the engine covers. Top up the coolant filler tank if you ended up losing much coolant.

spot-on description from the chicken B) , however from what you describe it's probably not going to fix your problem. The fan's controlled by a temperature sensor in the rad.. Have you got the aircon switched on? That may well get the fans running all the time..

its only one fan running the whole time yeah i have tryed with the aircon on or off and it still running,

yeah the sensor they sold me was like a four pin plug with a green sleve i don't think the parts man knew what i ment when i described my issue, i asked for the switch that screws in to the rad but he just had a confussed expression on his face.

Does anyone know what the switch is called that srews into the rad or even better the part number? i will return the sensor they gave me for the one that srews into the rad,

Regards

Paul

he's given you the wrong switch matey, yours is either a 1J0 959 481 A or a 1H0 959 481 B this controls the fans he's given you a coolant temp sensor

and to be fair theres also a control unit for your fans 1J0 919 506 K this is £95.30 though

Thanks for that mate apprerciate it, yeah thought he had, never mind ill pop down later today and hopefully get them changed over

How easy is it to change the rad sensor? the one on my Corrado VR6 was okward to get at, rusted and generally a right pain in the ass.
