How to replace coolant expansion tank?

Featured Replies

I keep getting the coolant warning light due to corroded connectors on the expansion tank - so I've decided to replace it. Anyone done this before?

Is it a case of just getting the old one off and quickly swapping and then topping back up with G12? I assume the system is not pressurised with the engine cold. I've had a searc but nothing came up

Any advice appreciated.....

Yes, just swap it out when the engine is cold. Very little coolant is lost if you are quick swapping the hoses onto the new tank.

Cheers.

Have done it now took me about half an hour. It's a bit tight in there with all the hoses for the aircon and god knows what else!

Any pressure there is will be released as soon as you open the tank cap anyway.

I got a fancy one ;)

Sorry to hijack but if coolant is leaking out of the sort of spout on the left side of the tank when pressurised does that mean the tank is fubar and needs replacing? I know it is not the cap as that has been replaced!

Cheers,

Dean

Sounds like the cooling system is over pressurising and blowing off excess pressure.

What could be causing that then? How can I remedy it?

Could be the head gasket.

Most likely if the cap is ok, get the system tested.

Could be the head gasket.

I hope not! :'(

Would it not overheat though? It stays steady at the centre of the temp guage and there is no mayo in the engine oil/ on the oil filler cap.

It may not. No mayo is a good sign but if your getting exhaust gas in the cooling system it wouldnt cause mayo anyhow.
