After some clutch advice Please :0)

Featured Replies

Hi all, just got my car back form the garage... New cambelt kit and waterpump. And ofc a stage 1 remap.

All going good except the clutch is a little bit slippy when accelerating under load, when doing about 50 in 5th gear for example if i accelerate then it revs about 750 over normal then drops back and bites.

So, new clutch time....

Been looking at a few retailers that sell clutches but there seem to be quite a few different ones to choose from, 220mm, 228mm or 230mm plates.

Also solid plates conversion was mentioned...

My engine code is ARX btw. Octavia 2001 Elegance 1.8 20v Turbo. 4x4.

Looked at GSF and this was the closest i could find by looking at a Golf Mk4 "189VG0740"

Thanks in advance for any help :0)

EDIT: before anyone says i shouldnt be doing 50 in 5th that is purely an example :0) i try and keep it over 2000rpm

dont think the ecs stuff or bodges review will be any good as its for a 4x4 and i was told the g60 flywheel with vr6 clutch was suitable for us with 4x4, best call a tuner and see what they advise

aye heard the same :0( proper skint now as well so may have to be a temporary cheapo jobby for the time being until i save a few quid for a decent clutch replacement, guess its off to Mr Clutch :'(

you never no there might be a decent cheap replacement available, call around and see what the say

What gearbox does the 4x4 have then? 5-speed 02J?

If it does, then the G60 fly and VR6 clutch will fit.

The flywheel will obviously fit your crank no problem, but the VR6 clutch only fits the 5-speed 02J boxes. Hence why the 6-speed 02M cars can't use this conversion (like the LCR for example).

ill go and see if i can see the gearbox code now, tbh i never looked

had a look on the car and cant see bugger all really, had a look around and after seeing o2j 4 motion written in the link for 4wd conversions there may be a small chance that we have a o2j box.

would someone look through etka for the gearbox codes for me to confirm as i dont have etka

ok some more info for you, went to find you a clutch, http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Skoda_Octavia_1.8_2002/p/Car-Parts/Transmission/Clutch-and-Associated-Parts/Clutch-kits/?641780920&1&eecc5c975bced1c08e096c670dc18972f890f1e3&CLUK

they have standard clutchs to so no need for a SMF conversion

the vrs clutch is there and our engine code is mentioned there also, size is 228 mm , so if the vr6 clutch fits the g60 fly and it fits the vrs then i would hazard a guess that it will fit our stuff too,BUT im only giving you an educated guess

hope this helps you out

yes it will fit uses the same box you just have the added transfer box

g60 flywheel and clutch WILL fit

there you go confirmation, just to note this isnt your only option clutchs can be had for less that £120 if you are on a tight budget

So the 4x4 elegance dosnt even use a dual mass flywheel? is that what your saying?

If so then that makes life easier, but means the chap at the garage was totally wrong when he said i would be best to get a conversion kit....

no, not what im saying.

you have DMF, but if clutchs can be bought for £120, why do you need a SMF conversion? ?

you stated the clutch was slipping, not a sign that the DMF is shagged so no need for the SMF conversion

IF the DMF is shagged then people look for the upgrade of SMF, the garage was probably trying to get more work i think

buy the clutch, fit it, job done.

aha !! i see,, know i understand, so it kinda comes down to wether the Fly wheel is nackered or not..

Found a garage (different one) that will fit a clutch kit for £150+vat, if i supply my own kit.

basically all isnt that bad really, bit of messing around but you have a solution now at least

Well just have to hope the Fw is ok :0)

The one you linked would be for if i had a SMF and this one below for standard DMFW...is that right?

http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Skoda_Octavia_1.8_2001/p/Car-Parts/Transmission/Clutch-and-Associated-Parts/Clutch-kits/?641441580&1&8a0bd0cd41a3b102369f1a47ba41ae0359dd957c&CLUK

On another note: anyone taken the starter motor off one of these? Mine is making a horrible squeal after starting, been reliably informed that they all do it lol.

Had a nose about and looks pretty easy to do, only saw 2 bolts and looks small enough to get out around the battery tray.

correct, the one you linked is for the DMF the one i linked is if you where to get a g60/abf flywheel cheap B)

Just a little bit of an update, in case anybody else finds the info useful:

Called Mr Clutch ( ) and they quoted £332.99 for a LUK clutch fully fitted inc vat.

Tried a few other places, worst quote was for £750!!!!!!

Popped in to see Roger at Andover Auto Services, really nice bloke and clearly knows his stuff, 23 years working for VAG ;) quoted £313 to fit a clutch if i supply it. inc SMF. (note thats for a 4x4, cheaper for 2wd)

Also found a full SMF clutch kit made by a company called "National" £165 with my nifty discount, anyone heard of them? did a google search but couldnt find much in the way of reviews etc..

Still looking at Bodges' thread, for the G60 VR6 stuff etc, seems almost too cheap lol.

Cant find a VR6 clutch kit anywhere near £70 on GSF btw...

EDIT aha except for this one "189VG0801" listed as a 92 > 97 VR6 Mk3 tho?
