Retrofit a Columbus Sat Nav to a Yeti

Featured Replies

Although give it it's due with the Traffic system it has diverted me off a motorway a couple of times to avoid a jam.

Regards,

TP

The biggest problem with diversions and radio distributed traffic warnings is that they tend to stick around long after the problem has been solved - frequently many hours and sometimes days.

The Columbus does have some very useful functions, which are none too well documented in the manual. One example is the "Traffic" soft key, which lists a detailed description of all the potential problem announcements distributed in the area you are in. You can then touch each that may have an effect on your planned path and get details - and then decide yourself if a diversion seems appropriate. I turn the "dynamic" guidance off, so I do not automatically get routed around, but have to agree to it manually - or just turn off and let it find the best way.

It would have been very useful to have a detailed listing of all the soft function keys and what they do when off and when on.

I was using a columbus unit in my octavia which I retrofitted which was brill. Not being able to fit it to my soon to be given to daughter's Polo, I have had to resort to using Tom Tom on my iPhone, and I must say that it is amazing. The traffic info is superb, so much more accurate than the columbus unit.

Apart from the tiny screen of the iphone 4, which is beautiful to look at, I am very tempted not to bother with a columbus unit in my SM when it arrives, and just get a mount from Brodit which will fit to the A pillar. Have to do something about the power though, as the iPhone will run down very quickly and I hate cables trailing all the way across the car. For that reason alone is why I may go back to the Columbus.

Saying that, the iPhone will/should play audio via BT through the sound system, so I will need a mount to use it safely anyway.

I won't be fitting this Columbus to my SM as it is too early a model - a 1Z0....A unit, so I need to sell it.
