In their latest Kia Sportage road test summary ,Autocar show the Yeti 140 tdi elegance first year depreciation as a massive£9000 or so.After three years the Yeti,Kuga and Sportage are about the same at around 9/10000 in value .How do they arrive at such figures? :dull: [incidentally their concluding rankings put the Kuga first,then Yeti,Sportage,Tiguan and lastly Peugeot 3008 in that order].....

Well according to Parkers an SE like mine which retailed at £19,370 last September is currently worth £15,000 as a P/X if their to be believed. They quote £17,600 for a main dealer used price which I think is a bit high but saying that there are few diesel SE 4x4 about on the used market, most being Elegance spec.

The Yeti 4x4 bargains at the moment are the 1.8 TSI SE with prices down to £15,500 for an 09/59 with 7,000 on the clock. Also seen a similar 10 plate for little more but here Parkers appear almost bang on, listing £15,675.

Planning to keep mine a while as long as she stays reliable (bar the occasionally tuneful cabin :giggle: )

Depreciation is only really going to sting if you buy new and sell within two or three years. It will with any new car. I bought my Audi TT for £31K. After two years, it went for £19K - that's a loss of £6K per annum... ouch! emoticon-0120-doh.gif I plan to keep my monster for a lot longer because I see it as a practical and functional motor that doesn't cost the earth to run and maintain. As long as it stays reliable and comfortable, I foresee it being in my possession for 100K miles. The plan is, of course, is to get a nice little toy to go alongside it for the summer in one or two years time - Mazda MX5 is top of the list. emoticon-0103-cool.gif

You definately get stung big time in the first few years. I got the Rangie for 24k at three years old when it was 66k new.

We are getting the Yeti to keep for a long time... otherwise there is no point in buying new in my opinion.

Few cars hold 50% of the value after 3 years and average milage in my experience. But buy one at three years and you'll lose much less from then on, which will save you a lot if you look after it. But at least from new, you know it's been looked after and will last you a long time.

Its only a rough guide but look at the What Car? "retained values after 3 years" data.

According to their data, a YETI 2.0 TDI CR 140 SE will be worth 43%, whereas a Kia Sportage 2.0 CRDi 4WD 5door will only be worth 33%. Most Sportages are around that figure.

Either way you are going to lose a shed load of money on most new cars over the first 3 years. Thats why I've always bought older cars in the past. My Octavia and Fabia were bought new but the reasons why I went new this time is a whole other story.
