Audio Concerns

Featured Replies

HI, I have been off for a while, I crashed the octy but it is fixed now. Right now I am looking into upgrading the audio on my Octy. I need a world of help on this. First concern I have is that my 2003 Octavia Classic only has speakers on the front. I need some sound in the back, but I was wondering what I could put in that fit. A friend recommended 6x9 on the shelf but I read about it here, and I have decided against it. My Octavia came with a Panasonic 45x4 HU, I don't know why. I am thinking about keeping it and just play song from my laptop. So I will replace the front speakers and add speakers on the back.

Should I go with speakers and tweeter sets or multi axial speakers?

Also I am putting some bass in, most people recommend 10' subs since I listen mostly to electronic music, and i don't have the need for big thumping sound, just punchy sound. I was thinking maybe 2 10's in the back. Someone else recommended combining 2 10' with one 12'.

So my question is, how much bass do I really need?

I am looking to put amps for both the subs and the speakers; my question is if i should go with 2 subs or one. I have seen that most people here go for one.

And what kind of wattage would be good for a car like mine.

As you can see I have a lot of questions, I thank you for any info.

Hey hey , nice to see you are back on the road again.

I wouldn't recommend 6x9s if you are getting a sub as you won't need the bass they produce and they are too obvious a target for thieves. I'd just get some 13cm coaxials fitted in the standard positions in the back , and some decent quality component speakers in the front.

I've got a single 10" JBL sub in the back of my octy powered by a (500w I think) kenwood amp and that's more than enough for me. The other speakers are just powered off the 4x50w head unit.

Agreed.... Dr.

the main reason i tihkn most go for one sub is to save space keep the weight down, and there all old men looking for SQ rather then barryboy bass

but a more serious note its all to do with balencing the sound, for example Dr. Zoiberg is happy with one 10" because he is running the speakers from the HU so teh mid and high frequecies are not going to drown out the 10" sub, if he was to amp his speakers he may find the bass reduces, it hasnt its jsut every thing else has got louder, he coudl turn up teh gain on his amp or the bass on his HU to try and rebalence the sound. or alternitively he coudl go for 2 10" subs and run more bass power..... so in answer to your question hwo much bass do i need? it all about personal taste.... i prefer a deeper fuller bass that fills the car, thats why i have a 12" sub, its not really about what is suited to teh car its about what else your running in the car and how your running them, and what you listen too, and hwo you like it to sound, bass heavy, or do you prefer it more in teh middle?

i woudlnt bother combining 10" with 12" this can sound worse then ever and chances are the 12" will drown out the 10" subs and it will end up sound terrible...you coudl call it 'a conflict of intrests'

the set up i have is comps in the front coax in the back and one 12" sub coz i prefer the deeper bass a 12" produces...this all runs off one amp a four channel directed 4500 one channel to the sub and the other two wired to 2ohm... its very balenced and goes well...

try goi8ng to your local ICE shop and listen to some demos of 10" subs and 12" subs so you can hear the diffrence take one of your CD and play your own music..... you wil lsoon get your answer

Thank you Zoidberg and Joel for the info, it really helps a lot. I now have a more clear idea of what i want. Oe of my big concerns now is if II should get a single amp for both subs and speakers or two and if i fo if they shold be different.

Also I wanted to know where are the standard position in the back tat Zoidberg mentioned.

The standard speakers fit under the plastic panels behind the rear seats at either side of the parcel shelf.

As for how many amps to buy , where are you in the country.

There may be someone nearby who can let you hear the stereo in their octy so you have some idea of what the end result is like.

id not recomend getting an amp for each sub/speaker ... you best off getting one big daddy amp that will do it all.. or one four channel for the speakers and a two/mono channel amp for the sub/subs.... ctahc me on msn if you want to chat more [email protected] where you from bud ?? id be willing to meet and let you listen to my set up... also i can install all the stuff if your not sure

:agree: I have one 400W RMS Planet Audio amp running the lot. A decent headunit is also a must (I highly recommend Alpine) as you want a nice clean signal going into your amp and also a decent 4v line as well.

As for no 6x9's!!!! You women!!!! :D I have 6x9 Cerwin Vegas on a stealth shelf as well as my cerwin components tweeters and 12" sub and it sound better than most night clubs :D Horners in Manchester were well impressed with the booming Octy

What size speakers can i pt under there? 5.25"s?

Also how much space do i have in the front doors for the 6.5"s

Rear , 13cm (5.25")

Front 16.5cm will fit but they must be shallow.
