changing rear light cluster

Featured Replies

hi all, my girlfriend's mum has a fabia on a 57 plate and is due the first mot in september. one of the rear light clusters have cracked which i believe is an mot failure. skoda wanted 110 to supply and fit which is a bit of a joke. anyway is it a case of a few tx screws and the electrical connector or something and it'll come out or is there more to it than that? haven't even looked yet i just wanted to know if there is any particular pain in the ass things to look out for (not that there would be)

also, sorry is a 57 plate is not a mk1? i have literally no idea which fabia is which.

any help would be great.

many thanks, Lew

Hi.

I can tell you that a MK1 Fabia has a quite square appearance, with a 'chunky' look, whereas the Mk2 has everything rounded off, and looks like a Roomster at the front.

All I know is the rear lights on my Mk1 vRS come out quite easily after you've taken off four nuts on the back inside the quarter panels, though the one at the bottom nearest the tailgate is a pain as you have to take off the trim panel along the bottom to get to it properly. The electrical connection just needs a squeeze and a pull to get it off the bulb circuit board.

I've never had a look around a Mk2, but should think it'd be a similar arrangement.

Regards,

Chris.

many thanks chris! that's a great help.

after a google image search her car is definitely a mk1. can see the shape difference as you mention the mk2 looks like a roomster.

does that rear trim panel you said about to get access to one of the bolts just unclip?

thanks

No problem. :)

I've just had a look in mine as I cant remember off the top of my head as it was a while ago I had one of mine out. (The head fell off a bulb and I had to take the cluster out to tip it out!)

Theres a screw at the bottom that holds it behind the trim panel that runs right across the bottom, and it clips in at the top near where the parcel shelf sits.

I think I just kept pulling and rocking it gently and it popped off.

You can get the light fittings off Ebay for 25 notes, but be aware there are two different types for the Mk1, one where the white section is like a 'u' shape on its side, and the older one where it is two seperate 'strips'.

Regards,

Chris.

its a damn shame there is no rep system on here!

yea ill make sure i find out what light it is before buying, i know what types you mean from google images!

so does that mean even to change a bulb youd have to undo all those bolts? that's crazy.. on my old car there was just a wing nut that span off then the light cluster was out.. then again it did let a lot of water in..

No dont worry,

the circuit board that holds the bulbs unclips from the back of the light in a matter of seconds, its just that the holes for the bulbs are on the tight side and if you're not carefull the heads of the bulbs get stuck, and in my case, come off! :o

i see, so the cluster is just pressed in inside the actual light and is fixed differently. that's a little different to what im used to but im sure it wont be too stretching. I'll have a go and just take it easy. im sure it'll be fine.

Thanks for all your help mate. lifesaver!
