£1000 plus for an ecu! please help

Featured Replies

hi everyone, just wondering if someone has had the same problem as me,wife was driving down the motorway and car just cuts out,RAC came along and traced it to a injector loom fault, robert banford skoda in gloucester, rings me today and say they are running tests and it could be an ecu fault, when they told me how much an ecu could cost i nearly **** myself (pardon my french).the car is a 2006 octavia vrs 2.0 diesel, will know the outcome by the end of the week, just hope its not the ecu, gonna be gutted if it is as i love the car to bits..... :(

PM'd...

No disrespect to your dealer but always get a second and even third opinion on any repair over £250. ECUs can fail but it's rare.

Last month a colleague of mine had a "failed turbo" diagnosed by a local, "reputable" main dealer - £1250 quoted. 2nd opinion at a local independent: absolutely nothing wrong with the turbo; just a blocked EGR valve needing a good clean - all sorted for £110. Who knows whether the dealer was trying to pull a fast one (single female) or genuinely mis-diagnosed the problem, but either way a 2nd opinion was worth its weight in gold. Hope you get it sorted.

hi,thanks for the advise on that, will definatly get a second opinion if they do say its the ecu, theses main dealers can be expensive and scary!!!....many thanks....

I you do need one, and it's by no means a sure thing, get the dealer to see about a out-of-warranty goodwill gesture from SUK. Failed after 4 years isn't good. Always worth asking, especially if low mileage and main dealer serviced.

...and if that fails, see if BBA Reman can help - they sorted out the MAF on a colleague's A-Class (integrated into the ECU - why?!?) for much, much less than the dealer wanted.

Here!!

Exactly the same thing was diagnosed on my VRS (november 2006 TDI PD).

Drove away from home and stranded just a couple of 100 metres from my front door (actually directly after the first crossing).

Wiring loom that goes to the PD elements got a short and damaged the ECU and one of the pd elements (number 3)

Car was 142tkm old at that moment and it cut out without any other symptoms. Engine just died and didnt want to start anymore.

I had an extended warranty for the third and fourth year, bought not long after I got the car.

But because of the mileage (over 100tkm) the warranty didnt pay 100%. They paid all the garage costs and 40% of the material costs.

All in all the repair cost me around 950€ in total.

Shortly after that (exactly 70km after I picked up the car) the car went in limp mode again and had a faulty exhaust temp sensor. Cost me 60 € (60% of the material costs).

Shortly after that my exhaust pressure sensor started to play up and I sold the car. That is why I have the audi now..........

well guess what!!!! had a phone call today, and i still own a non runner ;( they have said they have fitted a new injector loom but they still cant get it running!!! one guy said they would test the ecu and other things and then other guy tells me they wont do an electrical test because it would be hundreds of pounds they wouldnt even test the ecu, this is a main dealer who is supposed to have all the right kit to do this sort of thing, basicly they told me they dont know whats wrong with it!!!!!. a couple of indy garages i rang have said it could be an injector gone down which would make the car a non starter....if they are right, the main dealer is gonna get a phone call off me i knows!! they even had the car for just over a week......

ROBERT BANFORD SKODA OF GLOUCESTER........thanks for being so helpfull (NOT!!)

They should check the pd elements, my car got a new loom and ecu first and was still a non runner. After that they checked the pd elements and one was faulty. Changed the element and the car was OK.

yeeha!!!!!! got my vrs back today.......the garage had less than 24hours and got it fixed,,,no:1 injector had gone.....main dealer had it for just over a week and couldnt find the fault, poor show from a main dealer, they aint never gonna see me or my cash again,,,,but they are gonna recieve a stern email from me.........

Congratulation on having a repaired car back. And sent the first incompetent dealer a nice note. Paying for a repair that isnt a repair (car still dead) is a no go.

Before I had the problem, I had never read about it. But in the last 3 or 4 months I heard of at least 4 RS TDI PD with exactly the same problem.

My car had 142tkm on the clock.

And after the repair, first my exhaust temperature sensor went and than my exhaust pressure sensor.......

I would be asking for my money back from the main dealer! That is awful  At least you got the car going again though. :)

I would not class Bobby Bamford as a 'main' dealer TBH. Glad you had the problem sorted though.

Out of curiosity which indy did the work for you?
