slipping clutch?

Hi all,

Can anyone help, i brought a 2002 51plate vrs, :rofl: however when accelerating it gets to about 2000 revs and then shoots to about 4000/5000 then drops to about 2500,

i took it to a garage and the man said that it was a slipping clutch and quoted me £350 all in to fix??

So my questions are-

1) Is that what the problem is??

2)does my engine have a duel mass flywheel and if so does that need replacing as well?

1, Yes it sounds like your clutch is slipping. How many miles has it done?

2, No, Just a Single Mass. Depending on Mileage, it might be worth replacing whilst its having the clutch done. Especially if your going for more power. :thumbup:

HI thanks for the reply, how much would be to replace it like for like as more power doesnt bother me as i have to get used to what ive got first ;) my car has done 116,000!

The Octavia VRS should have a DMF as standard unless it's already been replaced with a single mass flywheel.

IIRC the DMF alone is over £200 so the price you've been quoted sounds pretty good. I think last time I looked at how much it would be for new clutch, DMF and labour it was somewhere between £500 and £600. You can get the parts together for a single mass flywheel conversion for less than £200 and that can save you money in future if the clutch goes again i.e. you won't have a DMF to replace too.

Ok thanks but what is likely to happen if i dont replace the DMF as money is tight :thumbdown: as a baby on the way in three weeks!!! :rofl:

It depends, a lot of garages will tell you the gearbox has to come off before they know whether the DMF does need replacing or not. So while they have it off to replace the clutch they might then say it needs a DMF as well. There is a way to check play in the DMF by removing the starter motor so if a garage can do that you will at least know whether you're looking at a new DMF as well or just the clutch.

If the DMF is knackered and it isn't replaced along with the clutch it can knacker the new clutch, also you would have to pay £££s again a few months down the line to have the gearbox off again to sort it out

Cheers Chicken, I wasnt sure, friends TT225 has a single mass, and thought it came like that obviously not. :thumbup:

I've just had mine replaced with the G60/VR6 combo. Much better.

If the car is standard you'll probably get away without replacing the flywheel. If it's been mapped, the safer bet is to replace flywheel also.

I did the vr6 clutch and flywheel for less than £300 fitted to my old ibiza cupra! That's wot am gonna do to my oci vRS! When it goes!
