Can anyone recommend a rear brake upgrade for 2.0 TDI

Featured Replies

Hey all,

just wondering can anyone advise, what to do with the rear brakes in my 2.0 TDI?

Its getting the Hybrid treatment soon so im getting the 312mm Front setup, but would like to do something with the rear also, was thinking would an aftermarket set of pads for the rear, would that be sufficient as most braking is done at the front and Im not doing any track days/ racing etc, just my daily driver.

although I do feel the standard brakes do feel like they struggle with the car as it is now, hence the upgrades.

Has anyone any recommendations/suggestions, and does anyone know how to tell which ones are the right ones, seems to be loads of different types on Ebay?

I dont have an upgraded turbo nor a remap but the brakes always felt adequate until I started towing. I might not be driving briskly around the countryside but having upgraded to 312mm setup using OEM discs and Tarox pads the breaking is so much better, I no longer get a shove from behind with the caravan on the back.

Personally I think you will be fine with the standard rears, I've done some quite heavy breaking from 60mph with 1000kgs of caravan on the back and it supprised me just how quickly we stopped.

The larger vented rear setup from the S3/R32 Mk5 would be the path to follow I think.

But I agree with Matthew - not totally convinced they'll actually get used that much more. The front upgrade you're considering is the thing to get sorted :)

cheers guys!

312mm brakes are being paid for tomorrow morning, so they are a definate. My rear pads are pretty worn so Im going to replace them with some performance pads just.

Any recommendations? and again any idea how I can check which ones I need?

Again, I'd probably be inclined just to replace the rears with OEM 'like for like'....

1+ as per Wardy's comments really,

What is the difference between your existing rears and the one off a vRS? if they are the same, i'd leave them alone. If not; and if you do feel the need for an all round upgrade, I would suggest keeping with what ever is matched to the vRS 312mm fronts.

I have upgraded mine to S3 all round, but did have a while with just the 345mm fronts on. The "nose dive" was more sudden and seemed deeper when braking. Balance was returned when i fitted the 310mm rears.

Although rears only have a smaller % effect in the overall braking effort, my advice with brake upgrades FWIW is not just to think about improving the stopping force, but ensuring the balance/bias is right too!

when I changed my pads for the first time after 100k I found the back to be MORE worn than the front.

Most of your questions are answered here http://www.stoptech.com/tech_info/tech_white_papers.shtml happy reading

Read the 4th one down re rear upgrades & put your money for the upgrade back in your wallet, if the pads are tired then I would put in better ones but I guess not essential.

The third makes good reading as well

I ran a highly modded Octy 4x4 with a tadge over 350 bhp, I had Ap 4 pots with 335x32's on the front & only changed the rears to tarrox discs when the old ones wore out but kept the samer size. I ran Ferrodo DS2500 pads all round. The car was used to its full potential & I never suffered any problems with the rear braking.

Also change your fluid for something better than stock, Dot 5.1 is the obvious choice for an upgrade & is widely available including at Halfrauds. If you have suffered with brake fade in the past odds are you have overheated tyhe fluid & each time it overheats the boiling point drops slightly so next time it overheats earlier. If you only do it once you can get away with bleeding it off the calipers until clear fluid comes through but if its happened a few times I would definately change the lot. It should IMO be changed every couple of years anyway. If you are not confident to do it & Im not get the dealer to do it & supply the better fluid

when I changed my pads for the first time after 100k I found the back to be MORE worn than the front.

Not uncommon

Rear pads by comparison are quite small & as modern electronic stability controls use brakes to balance the car they can be working not only when you are pressing the middle pedal so depending on how you drive the car they could be working harder than you think although 100K on a set of brakes points to a smooth driver (or you corner like the stig & brake for no one).

Our Old Mk1 Superb had 2 sets of rear pads & one set of discs in the 80,000 miles we owned it but was still on the original fronts but it was a bit of a barge & made to corner very hard at times :giggle:

Thanks guys! some really helpful stuff there, yes my rear pads have had it, so going to upgrade them while I'm at it.

The standard rears on the 2.0 tdi are smaller than those on the vrs models, so doing that should balance things out nicely, will try those ferodo pads. Will post up the results, thanks all!

80K out of a set of front brake pads....Wow. Never had any last longer than 30K on any car!

If you go for 312mm front breaks, can you still fit 16 inch rims for winter, or only 17/18 inch? Im thinking of uprating my Scout front brakes as car is heavy, but i am stuck with 16" winter tyres.

Cheers.

Yes, they'll fit under 16s.

Thanks.

Can anyone recommend a decent company that will sell and fit 312mm? So no DIY possible.

Cheers.

Best to track down a set on eBay/forum, then get a local garage to fit them for you.

Think I spotted a set being offered in a Wanted thread, but the poster needed a 5x100 set for a Fabia I. Will see if I can find the thread again.

Top man, cheers ;)

No probs - good luck

to follow on from my previous post, had a look at Ferodo pads, but cant justify £100 plus for a set of Daily driver pads, can anyone recommend something suitable for less than £80

They are worth it, IMO.

Have a look at Tarox Strada too - although have a feeling these will be in a similar price bracket.

I've had bad experiences with EBC pads, as have many - but others reckon their ceramic based pads are OK - think these are the 'Yellowstuff' range - again, unsure of price.

But at least you've got some to look for :D

For suppliers, look at Demon Tweeks and Motorsport World.

HTH,

Steve

If the Tarox Strada rears are as good as their fronts you wont be dis-appointed :)

I've no doubt they'll be superb - it's just the price I think :)

Classic case of getting what you pay for with brakes really. If it's any consolation, I've always found DS2500s to be hard wearing - so you should get good use out of them
