cleaning the MAF

my dad has recently cleaned his MAF sensor on his avensis and says its make a load of difference to the prformance, it feels quicker and more responsive. does anyone clean theres regularly on the vrs?

obviously not lol

A MAF is good for about 70k or 4 years before it needs to be checked.

I would suggest that the MAF is unplugged at least once a year. If the performance is better then the MAF has degraded significantly. If the performance is unchanged then it has degraded to a lesser degree.

Unless you have determined that the MAF is degraded you shouldn't try to clean it. The more times you have cleaned it, the shorter the time before it needs cleaning again.

I would do it once as a temporary measure.

Sorry to hi-jack and to ask a stupid question, but do pretrol cars have MAF's? I see them mentioned a lot on here, but not sure if it's a deisal only thing.

Yes most modern electronically controlled petrol engines either have a MAF (Mass Air Flow) or MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAP_sensor One forum member reported a noticeable MPG benefit after replacing the MAP on a 1.4 mpi.

Sounds like a good idea. But what chemicals would you use to clean, the parts inside are so delicate?

Best stuff is probably a fuel injection/carb cleaner that claims to be sensor safe.

If you are going to clean it, DO NOT use carb cleaner as it will damage the MAF. Carb cleaner contains Butane, Xylene, Naphtha and other 'nasties'

The safest thing to use is IPA (Iso-Propyl Alchohol)

IPA? Where can I get that from? Is it an areosol can?

You used to be able to get hold of IPA at pharmacists in bottles but I think they have all stopped selling it now.
