Flat battery 05 Octavia

Featured Replies

On several occasions after leaving my 05 Octavia 2.0 DSG for about 48 hours, I find the battery flat. Had the output and battery checked and both are o.k. Any suggestions (that are printable).

How was the battery tested? Could well be on its way out as its over 5 years old now.

Thanks for the response.

I don't know, I just took it to the garage and they did the job in the workshop. It has happened several times both recently and, I think propably over a 2 year period. I believe I remember something about the radio draining the battery if it wasn't turned off in its own right, only with the ignition, but I can't find that info now.

Have you upgraded to a Bolero headunit?

There is an issue with the CAN Gateway in a car of that age, whereby the Bolero will continue to drain the battery at all times. The gateway needs to be replaced with a later version if so, something like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300437092092&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT

Cost around £80-£100 for the part, and it sits behind the glovebox (or apparently above the pedals on new cars).

Many thanks, it still has the original head unit, but any info is much appreciated.

I would try the battery - I have had batteries before where the garage test them and say they are ok and they are not.

5 Years is near the end of life for a battery anyway. Far better to replace it now than in the middle of winter when it won't start cause its flat!

Before you do anything too drastic....have a look at the boot light (it might stay on) and one way to see if this is the case is to fold down the back seats and then shut all the doors (with yourself inside the car) and wait for the interior lights to go out-if the boot light is still on then you have a sticky contact and you can either fiddle with it or simply take the bulb out until you can tackle it properly at a later time-if it goes out then at least you've eliminated one thing......good luck

Had same problem with both my old bmw and my present fiat, changed battery had no more problems.

The bootlight staying on is a good tip. Had it on my old Renault 18 (poor manufacture) and more recently with SWMO Getz (accident damage).

I had the same problem, dead car if not used for 2 or 3 days.

The dealer checked it twice on their battery testing kit with a nice print out to boot. Still had the same problem though.

I decided to take the plunge and replace the battery and the problem has never come back, left the car for 5 days and it started perfectly. The original battery had done 120,000 miles.

Didn't go with the OEM effort, got a slightly higher Ah rated battery for a decent price.

i had volkswagen assist out to mine 2 months old with a flat battery, be aware that the 12v socket in the boot and the 12v socket

in the centre console do not turn off with the ignition.

the vw chap also suggested that the ecu had not shut down correctly when stopping the engine thus running all night draining the battery,

but a test showed nothing logged and no drain from the battery.

Thanks, that's worth a try.
