Driveshaft oil leak

Featured Replies

SWMBO's Toyota had a service today at the local Toyota dealer. They say there's an oil leak from the gearbox/driveshaft. They've quoted £240 to fix it. Most of this has to be labour, surely?

Can this be done DIY or am I best leaving it to the garage (when I've got the money to do it :(

Also, even bearing in mind that it was only an interim service, you'd think that they'd have checked the gearbox oil, having discovered a leak? But when the guy called me you'd think I'd asked him to buy me a lottery ticket. It obviously hadn't occurred to him at all..... emoticon-0114-dull.gif

Cost me another bloody £20 to "check and top up gearbox oil". emoticon-0149-no.gif

There will be an oil seal on the output shaft from the diff and this is probably leaking. To change this you will have to remove the drive shaft and then remove the output shaft from the diff. When you pull the shaft out the gearbox oil will run out so be ready to catch it. Remove the old seal and fit the new one. The oil seal won't be expensive, but check that there is no damage on the shaft otherwise a new seal won't cure the problem.
