Wheel Bearing?

Featured Replies

I have a rather annoying noise coming from the offside front wheel. It is constant and best heard on very smooth roads it's not a clicking sound like a CV joint on full lock but a whiny rumble that gets slightly louder in a slight turn. I've changed the outer CV joint (that is another story,,,, Pinch bolt !!!)

i have a feeling it's the wheel bearing. but i'm also wondering if it could be the inner CV joint.

Is there a way of telling which it is?

If it is the wheel bearing is this doable on the car or does it have to come off and go under a press to fit the bearing?

The good news is that the pinch bolt on this side is only about 6 months old so it may undo relatively easily. The bad news is that I think the nearside CV joint is starting to show sighs of wear now (faint clicking on power and slight left turn)

Inner driveshaft joints last well if the boots stay intact and the grease stays in. A worn inner joint will often cause a cyclic vibration through the whole vehicle as you accelerate - worse under load.

You will need to remove the entire steering knuckle to remove and refit the wheelbearings. A press is essential as they are tight. Remove the ABS sensor and be very careful not to damage the reluctor ring on the CV joint outer.

How many miles has your Superb covered?

I've done 121 000 miles and I've had the car from new. I shall be very sorry to see it go so I want to keep her going for as long as I can. The engine is still sweet as a nut, but how long that will last I don't know.

cheers

The AWX engine is good for starship mileages if correctly treated and if the correct oil is used. Wheel bearing replacement is relatively straightforward on the B5.5 but they're a very tight press fit in the steering knuckle. The inner race will be stuck on the hub too - a Sykes puller is useful for getting these off.
