Modest remap?

Featured Replies

Whenever I read about remapping the PD130 based engines, it always seems to be the case that people are getting around 180+ bhp and usually around 300+ lb ft of torque, and that they are getting greater drivability overall.

However, it does seem like something of a downward spiral of upgrading, having been reading about this for quite a few months, the more you go for power, the more you have to upgrade. For example, clutch is often cited as being the one component that will likely fail much more quickly than with a stock clutch.

Also, my limited understanding tells me that the more power the car has, the more it needs extra help for cooling, i.e. replacement intercoolers and downpipes that help reduce temperatures for the turbo and exhaust. This I would imagine often leads to those getting remap to also getting a new exhaust system and intercooler.

Now, in the future I would like to get my car remapped, however, I am not particularly bothered about having the most power possible. What I would like is a remap that offers noticably more over stock, but is a low maintenance upgrade for a mechanical numpty like myself. A remap that basically does not add any further need for maintenance over stock, or at least a minimal amount...

As my daily driver, the car needs to remain to be very reliable for a long time, as I intend to keep this car for many years, but at the same time, it would be nice to know that the drivability and to some extent, power when the time comes when I get bored with the car...

Thinking about it, I'd be relatively happy enough if the car could match the PD160 (Ibiza Cupra TDI) in standard form... I am not after a big increase in torque particularly, the car has enough of that already, but I would like an increase in top end power, to make the car seem to rev better (and further)... is this kind of map possible?

I am thinking somewhere along the line that if I could do that, maybe some improved airflow to the intercooler, strut brace, eibach springs + dampers and VAG 312mm brake conversion could be a beer budget way to make it better... what do you think? :)

Getting it to rev higher will probably put more strain on the internals than increasing the low-end torque. If you wanted higher-revving, should've bought the 1.4TDi...or a petrol... :D

Pretty sure the custom remappers could configure the car to drive exactly as you want it to...

Well not so much rev higher, but *keener* to rev if you see what I mean?

Is the 1.4 TDI revvy?

The way to get it to rev "quicker" would be to increase the torque. ;)

The 1.4 is a revvier than the 1.9...

Hmm I suppose, but like I say torque wise I'd argue it has just about enough as it is... if you look at the PD160 for example, the torque figure isnt much higher, but the power figure is, and its said to be better when revved - thats more or less what I'd like to achieve... see what I mean?

Oneclick is suppost to be a conservative map... circa 165-170bhp

True, but thats gone up about 50% has it not? Otherwise I'd have been very tempted... although this is something mainly in the future - I wish to make it stop and handle better before adding any power :)
