My electronic dash warning light came on at the weekend. Says in the manual its suggesting there is a fault with the engine electronics. There is also a burble at low revs that really annoys me. My garage says its noise from a potentiometer.

Any thoughts on common causes of the warning light and the burble?

See if there's a member near you who will do a VAG-COM scan for you, or get the gear (or a hand-held scanner) yourself. If there's a light on the dash, a hand-held should decode it just as well as VAG-COM - and either way, the light means the car knows what's up, even if your garage may not...
