lower g/box mounting-mot

Featured Replies

got my 1.9 diesel booked in for a mot on friday, checking it over today it looks as if i need a new lower g/box mount.

there is quite a bit of movement when you turn off the engine.

is it likely to be an issue with the mot?

i wont have time to get one and fit it before friday, so wondering if i should cancel mot untill i`ve done it.

just ordered the part from "jorily"- anyone know how quick they post? , it does not say on their website

Generally Jorily are good - usually get my stuff 2 days after ordering, and they are usually things which they have needed to get from VAG, I would imagine.

As for the MOT, I've never had a car fail on engine/box mountings. Many other things, but not that!

There's nothing specific about engine or gearbox mounts in the manual that I can see: http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual/contents.htm

Assuming it's just the rubber bush worn out, and nothing's actually rusted or falling off, I can't imagine it being too much of an issue - it's not like it's a critical part for safety or control of the vehicle. Mind you, if they do flag it up I'd be interested since I think all three of my engine/gearbox mounts could do with replacing!

I've also received everything I've ordered from Jorily so far (both website and eBay items) within a day or two.

surely an engine mounting is a load bearing structure for the purposes of an mot? i would have though unless it's fallen to pieces completely you would only get an advisory note for it...

ref jorily, i've bought loads of stuff from jorily and it normally arrives next day if it is in stock

The thing is that worn out engine/box mounts usually allow the engine to rock making annoying (to the occupants) noises, but the mounts themselves (as opposed to the bodywork they attach to) rarely to never fail in a way that would allow the mechanicals to drop out onto the road.

 just back from mot and everything ok, 1 advisory-"slight play offside lower ball joint".

only did 1500 miles since last one!(mot that is, not balljoint) - in 7yrs i`ve only put 16k on the clock (now on 68k)

and waiting for me on the doorstep when i got back was the part from "jorily", just going out to fit it now!

part fitted(10 minute job) and ball joint ordered

if it has the original felicia balljoints still fitted they will be revitted to the track control arm, so you will need to drill out the rivets to fit the newer bolt on type

yes, it is rivetted- i see that the new one has 3 nuts and bolts with it!

they are ******-hard steel rivets too, so i recommend taking the arm off the car and using a pillar drill

i was thinking of carefully grinding most of the heads off using cordless drill and wheel,
