Strange (fast) ticking noise from bottom of my 1,8T

Featured Replies

Hello

I hope there is an expert or two here who can tell me what the heck is going on in my engine :(

I bought my 2004 Superb 1,8T (AWT engine) this summer, and now it has a strange ticking sound specially when the engine is cold.

NO its not from the valves, nor the camshaft chain.

When the engine is cold and revs at 1200rpm the noise is very strong.

First I thought it was the generator, but it was not. Even when I removed the belt - the noise was still there.

Then I thought it was the waterpump, but after I have removed the timingbelt cover I hear that the sound is from the bottom of the engine.

The sound is difficult to explain, but it sounds like (thin) metal thats touching fanblades or something like that. The frequency of the "ticking" is much faster than the engines rpm.

After a few minutes the engine comes down to 900rpm and the sound dissapears. As soon as I touch the accelerator the sound comes back!?

When the engine is hot its nearly gone, but I can still hear it at about 2000-2500 rpm.

Could it be the oil pump? Or the oil pump chain or tensioner?

PLEASE HELP!

I have something similar to what you're describing. When I start my car the revs goes to 1200rpm and there's the same sound as you're describing. If I switch off aircon it almost goes away and once the engine is warm/hot it's normal. TBH this is happening since I've remaped my car .... is your one remaped too?

Yes its remaped by OCT tuning: http://www.oct-tuning.com/

And its possible that the strange sound came after it was remaped, but I dont understand why remapping should have anything to do with it. :wonder:

There is no difference if I switch on/off AC.

It's not "pinking" is it? Spark advanced too much? Running too lean? Switching on the aircon would effectively put a load on the engine and call for different fuelling?

Just guessing .....

No it isnt that kind of noise, the sound is from the bottom/front of the engine.

And its ticks/clicks faster than the engines rpm.

Today it was just 5 degree celsius outside, and then the clicking didnt go away even after the idle drop to 900rpm.

Its sure that the engine temp has something to do with it.
